Baby Names

DH loves Abigail, but not so much me...

Hi All,

DH "discovered" the name Abigail a few days ago and is falling in love with it. I told him that it is number 8 on the SS list (around 14,000 Abigails born last year...) and that turns me off of it a little. Its popularity doesn't really change how he feels about it...

Any suggestions for similar or same-ballpark names that are a little less common? The middle name would be "Rose".

 Thanks!

  • What about just Gail (Gale?)?

IDK if these are really even that similar to Abigail, but for some reason when I hear that name I think of Aubrey & Audrey.

  • Abigail was on my list of girls names before I found out I was having a boy. I like the nn Abby. SO's sister had her little girl in march and named her that so no chance of me using it.
  • Abigail Rose is one of my all-time favorite girl names so I'm going to side with your DH on this one!  I think it's one of the popular, but classic names.  It's not trendy.  It's like Jacob or Michael for a boy.  There will always be a lot of them because it's a good, solid name.
  • My DH likes the name Abigail too.  I like it but I don't love it

Suggestions from the Baby Name Wizard book (that I'm officially obsessed with lol): Hannah, Chloe, Lily, Faith, Isabel

Since those are still pretty popular names, some others suggestions:
Adeline, Amelia, Angelina, Anna, Annabel, Annalise, Astrid, Ava, Carolina, Catalina, Cecily, Charlotte, Clara, Cora, Daisy, Eleanor, Eliza, Ella, Eva, Evelyn, Georgia, Grace, Hazel, Ivy, Josephine, Julia, Katharina, Lena, Lila, Lillian, Lucy, Lydia, Maeve, Mariah, Michaela, Molly, Nora, Phoebe, Sadie, Stella, Victoria, Violet and Willa

  • Thanks for the suggestions!

Becky? so many of your suggestions hit my name "style" on the head! I have been trying to convince my husband of  eliza, amelia, or stella for weeks.

I just need to figure out how to make one of the names I like "his" idea i think:)

I know!  That's why I absolutely love The Baby Name Wizard book!  So many good ideas in there that I just have to share  :)

Ask him what he likes about Abigail.  Is it a classic name? Old fashioned? Feminine? Ect, then use his answer to say Well, there's another classic name I've been thinking of...  KWIM?  Or suggest a name like Amelia Abigail

  • We're naming our LO Abigail Grace. I think it's classic and pretty. I'm not overly concerned with the SS list. That doesn't tell you how popular it is in your area. I don't know any Abigails IRL. Besides, I'd rather not have a trendy name. The first "similar" name that came to mind was Addison, and that screams "trendy" to me. Does your DH know that it means "Father's joy"? That's another thing we liked about it too. GL with whatever you decide.
