How much sugar does your LO get?

There have been a few occasions where Garrison has had different food items (and LOVED them) only to find out they had added sugar in them. We try to look for this but sometimes forget or when we were out at dinner and the kids meal came with apple sauce or fries, we went with the apple sauce, but I'm sure it was standard Motts with sugar.

How vigilant are you about giving your child things without added sugar (you know, beyond a few grams)?  Would a yogurt or applesauce a day (~12 grams) be too much?  Two or three times a week, or even less than that? I mean, it's not like we're giving her chocolate cake every day, but I know sugar adds up pretty easily and I don't want her to get too much of a taste for it that her peas and carrots aren't as tasty anymore.

Interested in your thoughts, thanks!

Re: How much sugar does your LO get?

  • At first we tried to avoid sugar, but honestly we gave up.  We do the best we can at home, but when we're out it's fair game.  Even despite the cookies and candy that Miles gets now (yes I'm that Mom) he will choose grapes and "strawbabies" over cookies if given the option.  He loves corn, peas and will eat any fruit.  So he is a good eater as far as nutrition goes.

So we really don't worry too much about the sugar he gets because he doesn't get THAT much.  I'm a sweets addict though...so my viewpoint may be different than yours.

  • We try to avoid any and all sugar, especially corn syrup and High Fructose Corn syrup, which at this point is still pretty easy. I, too, am a sugar addict and I don't want DD to struggle with that, so even when she gets older we'll limit it as much as possible.

  • I'm not sure what "phase" Claire's going through, but she's a happy carb eater and loves several fruits.  Corn is the only veggie she'll touch (although she ate all of them in purees).  She will nibble at baked chicken nuggets and fish sticks.  So, I'd say that she gets plenty of sugar.  I won't just give her a chocolate chip cookie just to give her one, but if we're in a situation that they're given out or the other kids are having one, then she'll eat one, too.

  • For the most part - we avoid it - BUT .. it does sneak in here and there.  For example - I used to just give Jack plain whole milk yogurt and mix fruit puree (that did not have any sugar in it) into that - but nowadays, I give him "yo toddler" yogurt (which does have some added sugar) but I mix two GIANT spoonfuls of plain whole milk yogurt into it to cut it (he generally does not finish the whole bowl, so he's getting less sugar than if he just ate the yo toddler yogurt plain.

The apple sauce and apple juice I give him (and I water it down A LOT - 1 part juice to about 3 parts water) has no added sugar.

He does get some EB organic graham crackers and occasionally some of their cookies - but that's about it.  So while we do try to avoid it - mostly we just end up limiting it, a lot.  We don't do any other cookies or desserts, he's never had soda (and won't, for many years!) - and he gets mostly freshly cooked food.  Oh - he does like ketchup though .. that has sugar.  Same with bbq sauce.  So it does sneak in, no doubt about it, here and there.

    Wheee!
