You totally don't need one - but you can rent them online - google it. The home ones often don't work very well until after 12 weeks.

rented mine through bellybeat...I'll only really need it until I start feeling baby--probably around 16 wks since I felt ds at that time and you actually usually feel them even earlier the 2nd time around...maybe I'll wait though for more regular movements --i love ours though! i got the one with the screen to tell BPM

edited in to say i found mine at just before 10wks...everyones different!!!

we have one that my FI's aunt let us borrow from her office. But my doc said not to use it often because it can be harmful for the baby, it lets off radiation (I think thats what she said) anyways she said its not good to use often and thats why sometimes docs dont listen to the baby's heartbeat if everything is going good. And if they do they only listen for a couple seconds.

I dont know if this is the same for the ones you can buy in the store?- does anyone know?
