gun poll

A post on a blog I follow got me thinking about guns in houses and playdates as C gets older, so I thought I'd ask here just because I'm curious.

(of course, this poll is assuming that everyone takes the necessary safety precautions and locks up guns/ammo separately and all that stuff, I'm really just curious about presence/absence)

Re: gun poll

  • I'm terrified of guns, and while part of that is the OCD talking, I like to think that part of it is rational, as well. My dad owns multiple guns, although to my knowledge there were never any in our house growing up. I'm always on edge when we're down there visiting, especially when we're on the boat because he always has it with him. He keeps it locked in the glovebox, but just the fact that it's there puts me on edge.

  • We dont at this time but DH would like to get one and I am a little worried.  I grew up with them in the house but they were always in a safe (my mom has one out for her protection now but we don't know where it is).  I am okay if it is in a safe and if you teach the kids about them.  Right now ours our too little to understand but we will discuss it with them especially if we ever get one (most likely wont).
Our kids are 19mths apart and we LOVE it!!

Married to my BFF on 8.13.05 (after dating 5 years)!

DS born 2.14.08. DD born 9.30.09.

  • We do not and will not ever.

However, my parents had 1 gun in the house growing up.  I knew about it, saw it and knew not to ever touch it.  And it was always really scary to me.

  • We don't have one because DH and I don't really know how to handle them personally. But I am totally okay with others keeping them safely in their own homes. My Dad has always owned guns and has always been very safe with them.

  • We obviously don't have a choice, but I hate guns and wish we didn't have to have one.

  • I can't even stand when someone points a toy that resembles a gun at me. I'm spooked by them, and they make me nervous. I told DH that we will never have one in our house. He puts up a fight, but it's not gonna happen.

More of my friends than I care to think about own multiple guns. They keep telling me that if I knew how to shoot one and felt comfortable with them, I'd be more open to having one. But I don't want to be comfortable with a gun! My SIL (DH's sister) and BIL have 10 guns. He's a hunter, but still. They have a nice gun safe and all. But it makes me nervous for my niece and makes me rethink letting DS stay there when he's older. Stupid, maybe? But I can't stand the thought of it.

  • Here is why I am scared to death of guns. My Mom had a long time boyfriend whom we lived with.  He had shot gun type guns in a case with a chain & a lock with a key.  Problem #1 the front of the case is glass as most gun cases are for those types of guns because everyone wants to look at them of course Wink  Problem #2 it was often left unlocked. Now I have more than one reason as to why I am scared of guns.

The main reason being that when I was between my sophomore year & junior year of college I worked two jobs during the summer.  I was a manager of a pool & a waitress so my hours were never consistent.  So I came home to change out of my bathing suit and into my clothes for my waitressing gig. Luckily my favorite Jessica Simpson (don't judge ;) song was on the radio & I was rocking out in the driveway because my boyfriend has recently dumped me.  So I stayed in my car longer than usual. We lived in the country in an extremely small town where no one locks their doors.

Anyway I walked in on our house being robbed.  They were only robbing us for the guns which were in the basement so they knew about them.  We later found out that this guy was a convicted murderer who had recently gotten out of jail.  The guns that he took were not only unlocked but loaded. Thankfully I was unharmed but it has scarred me for life.

  • No guns here and there never will be.

My grandmother was murdered in cold blood with a gun. I always hear "blame the person, not the gun" but the truth is it would have been a hell of a lot harder for him to kill her with a knife or any other weapon.

Not to mention, I'm afraid of what I'd do with a gun so easily available to me. I'm a bit of a hot head and have a pretty good reason to shoot a certain someone.  Stick out tongue

Ditto this!  Lily got a hold of a toy gun that was left at our house after a Halloween costume party.  I threw it away when I caught her playing with it!

  • DH and I each have a small handgun. They are currently in our bedside nightstands. We are purchasing and installing safes that bolt to the inside of the drawer and require a 4-key combo to unlock.

Guns just don't scare me. DH and I took an 8-hour concealed carry class when we bought our first gun. We both feel completely safe having them in our home. They are locked up when we have kids over, and almost no one even knows that we own them.

I like shooting for sport. I want to get a shotgun, even though I could never hunt. I like skeet shooting.

When the baby gets here, guns and gun safety will be discussed, but guns will never be outside of their safe in the house.

  • Nope, never. Never ever. For all the reasons everyone else listed above. Too many variables for me to feel comfortable. Plus since I'm kind of uptight guns have always felt a bit...unseemly.

  • My husband is really into guns, and buys them as "investments", meaning he buys them, keeps them for a while, and then sells them at (hopefully) a higher price.

He used to shoot for pleasure with his buddies that he grew up with.  They are all up into the d*mn things.  Fortunately, they know what they're doing and they handle them safely, but I hate this hobby of his.

We have a gun safe in our basement and all of the guns are in there.  I do not know the combination and I don't want to know it.

He used to keep one under his pillow when he lived alone but I put a stop to that when I got here.

  • We do.  DH hunts, plus he has some that he has collected as well as were passed down in his family.  Everything is kept where kids can't get to it.  I'm not thrilled with guns in the house, but DH is safe about it.

DH has his concealed carry.  I don't, but I took the hunter's cert classes as a kid (I think middle school).  DH love skeet, I prefer trap, but DH was in a collegiate team too.  :)

  • I didn't like guns when I first started dating DH but that was because I didn't know anything about them or how to handle them.  DH is a huge bumpkin, goes hunting every fall and winter and when DS1 was old enough he did a gun safety and hunting class and joined a 4H club to teach them more gun safety and proper handling.  I won't say how many guns we have but we're members of a sportsman's club now and DH has taught DS1 to shoot bows as well as a shotgun and rifle.  I have been on the range and shot rifles too.  We plan on getting our concealed carry soon.

  • We don't yet, but we will eventually - in a safe.

I grew up around guns, took all the safety classes and it was ingrained in me at a young age of their power and they are to respected and handled carefully. (My dad is a NRA safety instructor.) We had toy guns growing up as well, but there were rules about where you were and weren't allowed to point them (e.g. never AT someone, just at the ground in front of them).

My dad hunts, was in the military, DH grew up hunting and was in the military so they don't scare me. My dad bought me a gun and wants me to take his concealed carry class, but honestly I am in no rush because it really isn't that important to me to have one in the house for safety, but my dad would feel that I (all of us) would be safer if we had one for protection in the house. I don't think that I would feel less or more safe either way. I don't keep the gun here, so obviously you can tell I am in a real hurry to get it. LOL I don't get it until after I take the class and get a dad-approved safe.

  • My DH and father both hunt so both have shot guns.  We shoot clay pigeons every Thanksgiving and now that I know how to use a gun I don't feel nervous about them.

Just a few years ago I found out that my dad kept a hand gun in our house growing up for protection.  I really respect the fact that we kids never knew it existed much less where to look for it.  I think that's a pretty responsible way to own a gun.  His opinion was that if we never knew it existed we wouldnt be curious about it and go looking for it.  It worked

  • We've never had a gun and never will. The only family that I knew who kept guns while we were growing up lost their 20-year-old son to suicide by gunshot. Everyone in the family had access to them and he, unfortunately, went through a bad spell and used their handgun on himself. It was very traumatizing.

  • DH has one that is locked away and out of reach. Many of my family members hunt, which is pretty much the norm where I'm from.  We had to take gun/hunter safety class as part of our middle school curriculum.  While I don't personally have a need for guns, with all the hunters in my family, we're inevitably going to be around them.  As long as they are used responsibly and properly secured & locked away, then I'm okay with that.

  • DH has a gun and is licensed to carry.  He keeps it locked in a safe hidden in our closet.  I've always grown up with guns in the household, but always locked away.  I will admit that they still make me nervous to touch, even when they are unloaded.
  • Nope, not in my house.  I don't feel comfortable around them, which is weird since my dad has had several at a time my whole life and is an extremely responsible gun owner.  He kept asking us to get one and we politely declined.  I don't think twice about Logan being at my parents' house though.  The guns are always locked up and my dad is a total spaz when it comes to Logan anyway.

  • Nope. Never in my house. I did not grow up around them, no one in our family hunts, and I just don't see a need for it. My brother-in-law just got his concealed carry license and has 2 handguns and I have no idea why he feels the need to have them. I think it just feeds his macho ego. He does not have them locked up (he lives by himself, no kids) either. He keeps one in his nightstand and one in his basement family room where he is 90% of the time. I really don't understand the need. But that is just me.

this here too. I was much older (high school or college? ) when I found out that my  dad had a gun in the house. It's in a safe that I don't know the combo to.

I kind of laugh at him though because I ask why do you have it? He says for protection but I just don't really buy into that. By the time he would wake up realize there is someone in the house, stumble to the safe, remember the combo, get the gun loaded half asleep and panicked....yeah I don't get it. But maybe it's just because I don't like guns and I try to think of excuses not to have them

  • DH has his concealed carry permit and has multiple hand guns and shot guns that are in safes in our office.  DH grew up around guns and always did target shooting etc.

I on the other hand did not grow up around guns and they were never in my house...so as a result I am not comfortable with them and really have no desire to have anything to do with them.  I would strongly prefer that they were not in my house, and it took a lot of getting used to...but you have to pick your battles I suppose.  All of these years later DH tries to get me to go target shooting, educate myself about guns or even touch one...but I refuse.

We have very differing views about how our children are going to be raised....DH wants the kids to be comfortable with guns at an appropriate age...I want them to have nothing to do with them....but I guess we will tackle that as it comes.

This exactly! DH is looking into buying one of the safes that uses the fingerprint kind of things as a combination so that its faster than him having to put numbers in to get it out right now its not locked up becuase obviously Nicholas is so young that its not a risk yet (once he's mobile at all it will be locked up as are the rest of his rifles/shotguns)

DH grew up hunting and around guns while I did not (at all). I was kind of afraid of them when we first started dating but then DH took me skeet shooting, taught me about how the gun works and the mechanics, taught me how to clean them, etc. and I do feel MUCH more comfortable because like with anything knowledge is power and understanding helped me feel better

I lived alone in a 1 bedroom apt before DH and I got married and I kept his .22 under my bed and there was a time when someone did try and come into my apt. late at night and I was surprised at how much safer I felt being able to grab my gun and go hide than just hiding somewhere or trying to find another weapon (like a knife or bat or something)
