adjusting kids to animals?

we don't have pets and my kids have not really been around dogs or cats outside of seeing the dogs walking in the neighborhood or whatever. so yesterday we went on a play date & they had a cat & it freaked DD out completely. she was so scared, shaking & even started crying hysterically at one point every time it would come near. I tried to hold her on my lap while it kind of walked around us but I could tell she was trembling

What is the best way in the future to address the fear but try to minimize it & get her used to animals?

Re: adjusting kids to animals?

  • oh no, is there anyway you can expose them to animals more often?

We have two cats and my ILs have dogs so she's around animals alot and she does pretty well.  I think it's helpful the more she sees them!

  • If no one close to you have pets that she can be exposed to, maybe a trip to the pet store would help.  She could take lots of time to look at the animals first and maybe on another trip she might be tempted to pet one.  Claire has an animal video that she watches and we have a little local zoo also.  I hope that she gets over her fear soon!  Poor thing!

  • That's what I figure, the more she seems them but I'm actually allergic to cats so I don't particularly like to be around them or pet them but if we're at people's homes where they have them, my plan is to try to have her near one, not make her touch it but I will pet it & just sort of gently approach the animal & show her it is ok. Today we went for a walk & a neighbor's dog came up & was sniffing at their legs & feet & she was just sort of watching him so I guess that was good.
