so i've seen a bunch of posts lately of some good items to add to your registry that second time moms have loved, however, i just feel like my registry doesn't consist of the MUST haves, and looks more like stuff that i thought was just cute. i've never been around kids until the last couple of years, and really am clueless as to what is a MUST have and what is useless. i look at some of the must have's people have written about, and i don't even know what the heck they are for a lot of times, so i feel like a total idiot. haha. i would love some advice on the following, from anyone that has/knows it:
bottles and nipples - what are the best types to get and why?
diapers - how many of each size should i be buying? i know this is based on my child's size, but is there an "average" number?
highchair - should i be buying this now or waiting until the child needs one?
bottle warmers - thoughts on these? are they just gimicks or are they a good idea?
bottle sanitizers - i've seen microwave one's and several other types, are these a good idea?
what is the best form of keeping the baby warm in their car seat, since we'll be delivering in dec or jan? i've seen so many different things and have no idea what to get.
any other advice? such as MUST haves on a registry, relating to safety, feeding, etc.?
thanks in advance! i really appreciate any help, and so i don't feel totally lost anymore!
Re: registry .. totally lost ..
There were a TON of posts this week about registeries. I would look back through the week and read through some of them. Lots of ideas from second time moms about which products worked best for them, items to add, and some ladies even shared their registeries.
If you don't know what a product is for you can usually figure it out from a short description listed with it or google the name/type of product.
GL!
Okay...like you I am a first time mom. I REALLY REALLY recommend the book Baby Bargains by Denise and Alan Fields. It's the best money I ever spent and all the info I am about to share with you comes from there.
Bottles & Nipples- Register for a few different kinds of bottles/nipples . The book makes some recommendations as to good brands, but in the end, it comes down to what your baby likes. There is a post on this in the last day or two if you're looking for more specific brands.
Diapers- BB recommends 100 size Newborn/Size 0 diapers and 500 Size 1 diapers.
Bottle Warmers- They're nice, but you could do the same thing with a pot of water and a stove. Maybe an item to add to registry and to not bother with buying if you don't get it. I'm planning on breastfeeding, so I'm not getting one.
Bottle Sanitizers- Most new dishwashers have a sanitize cycle. If you have a new-er dishwasher, thats probably all you need. Otherwise, I've heard good things about the Avent microwave sanitizers.
Car Seat Covers- There are like 4-5 posts on this in the last few days. Most people here are fans of "shower cap style covers" for safety reasons. Just google them and scroll back through the last few days here for lots of discussion on them.
Set to welcome the craziness in April 2014!
thanks so much for your help! i am going to buy that book for sure. i also found a class at the hospital for first time mom's that goes over pretty much all the top items you should know, and how to care for your newborn. which i think will help leaps and bounds.

couldn't find the car seat cover one but this is the one we registered for, it doesn't interfere with the safety of the seat (we are registered @ BRU and Target) https://www.target.com/gp/detail.html?asin=B0033XSWNS&colid=33FGYF3BQ77RM&coliid=I1KW0CFALJ1RDB&bckreg=baby
Feel free to look at my registry, if it helps any. I feel like mine is, for the most part, complete (although I am by no means an expert and read every "wtf goes on a registry" post I come across for ideas).
ETA: my diaper strategy is a little different. I registered for one value box of nb diapers (i think there are 96 in there?) and then one big pack of 4 different kinds in size 1 - Pampers Swaddlers (64 ct), Pampers Baby Dry (84ct), Huggies Little Snugglers (66ct), and Huggies Snug n Dry (84ct). We'll start stocking up on value boxes when we know which kind works best for LO.

I'm not going to go through the entire list, because there are quite a few posts about MUSTS.
But, the one thing that was the greatest thing I received was the Boppy. We used it for everything. Feeding, lounging, and it helped people hold her comfortably.
wow, that helped so much. i probably pulled about 10 items off your registry that i didn't even remotely think of! thank you!
Katie: 1/16/08 2lbs. 15oz.
Abby & Emily: 12/31/10 6lbs. 2oz. & 5lbs. 7oz.
Bottles/nipples - we used Dr Brown's and will again for this baby. A lot of women get a few different kinds to see what works best for your baby. The nipples come in sizes also (the hole gets bigger as baby starts to eat faster) so be sure to register for different sizes to have as baby grows.
Diapers - I would get very few nb to start. The 1's usually go to about 14 lbs. DD was a big baby, and at 2 months was 13 lbs. Keep in mind, babies go through 8-10 diapers per day. DD seemed to stay in 3's for a while and has been in 5's for a very long time, but those are not immediate needs.
Highchair - won't use this until about 4-6 months old when they start cereal and other solids. I suggest the SpaceSaver. We had the Chicco one and it was so huge I hated it.
Bottle warmer - we used one briefly. In my opinion, it became more of a pain to deal with and dd would take her bottles at room temp with no problem. If you plan to premix and refrigerate the bottles, then you are more likely to use it. DD would not take the bottles cold.
Bottle sanitizers - think I used it one time. I washed by hand mostly, but also would run them in the dishwasher from time to time.
Hope that helps a little!

I actually have 2 Boppys. I left one in the nursery on the glider for feedings, and I had one out in the living room for daytime use like lounging and feeding. It worked out well for us.
I hear ya. Would I use 2 boppys? Probably. Do I need 2 in a small apartment? Not really. Not that I get to dictate what people buy, but I'd rather indicate which things I don't have but need, kwim?
