I had a Stephen Lynch song in my head that made me wonder...what do YOU say when you see someone's baby when the baby is just NOT cute at all? You know, the parent (like most parents) thinks their kid is just precious and they're totally not.

I had a co-worker once who had a little boy who looked a bit like Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean) and I couldn't think of what to say except, "Wow...look at all that hair!" I thought that was the most neutral comment I could make...but the poor dear was NOT cute.

I usually try to find one feature and focus on that, like "Look at those long legs, you have got a basketball/volleyball player on your hands" or "What a smile!". If all else fails I just lie and hope I sound sincere.

I pick out a feature that is cute (eyes, feet, hands, hair) and say what gorgeous eyes! etc. if none of those things are cute i say "what a little darling!"

I just say, wow, he/she looks just like (whomever) - they usually do look identical to one of their parents, which is what makes them look weird in my experience. Or I comment on the clothes/shoes if possible. Or just little sounds, no words: "oooooohhhh, look at him!" etc.

I usually will say how cute their eyes are or ask what the baby's name is, then comment on that...honestly though, I don't run into too many babies that are that unfortunate looking Wink

This. I feel like it's kind of a given to tell parents that their baby is cute, especially the first time you see the baby. I see no harm in lying about this!

I comment on a feature or tell the parent the baby looks just like them. I shall not say a baby is cute if they aren't.

Hehe...I started thinking too. I should say that if I do make a neutral comment though, like about their hair or something, it doesn't mean I think they're ugly.

There was a baby with a cleft palate at dinner last night. They were at the table behind me and DS. I focused on everything else. We talked about the ages, names. We had the same car seat, and a matching toy, etc...

Ohhhh goodness, I'm alittle worried now! Consdiering I get "Ooohh my goodnes, look at those eyes" No matter where I go. I of course think I have an adorable child, So I'm not really worried about what others think, but the next time I get that comment, I might just bust out and say "Do you really think he's ugly?" heheheheeee

I will usually say the baby is precious because all babies are a precious gift. I will not lie and say a baby is cute if I don't think they are.
