Just wanted to chime in with my experiences with maternity leave as a teacher.
My disability (I have The Standard) started when I took off work (ended up being 2 weeks before EDD) and continued until 6 weeks past delivery...BUT, since I had sick time saved up that covered all that time, I got a very small amount (ended up being less than $1000 for the whole time) then I stayed out for my whole 12 weeks of FMLA after delivery and the last 4 weeks I ran out of sick time so it was all unpaid.

Thanks! I know I have some sick leave, but it will not cover the full 6-8 weeks I'll be out. The insurance I have pays a stipend, so I'm not quite sure how that will work. It's all really confusing!

BFP #4 - EDD 12/09/12, Lucille arrived 11/26/12
it is, and my district (and union) told me one thing and then when it actually happened, it was something different.

Oh, and if it had been disability (not FMLA) I would have only had to pay my differential (the amount they were paying my sub) but since I had enough sick leave to pay me through my disability period, I got screwed several ways.
Next time I probably won't have any sick time so I'll get my full disability pay AND only be paying my differential. Stupid system! THESE are the things the union should have bargained this go around when we gave up pay and class size. They should have been getting better leave and job protection.
Remember, your unpaid days (if you have any) will be at your daily rate. Take your entire year's salary and divide by your number of work days (for me it was 182...180 teaching days and 2 work days) so that daily rate is obscenely high! (over $400 a day for me)
Sometimes I wish we paid into SDI, they seem to get a lot better deal AND they can get PFL for taking care of the baby OR another family member (another teacher had to take 6 weeks off to help her father after triple bypass surgery and it was all unpaid...she lost like $12,000...if she was covered by PFL, that would have been at least partially paid)
