TTC after 35

TTC question

So, I went to my GYN for my annual checkup. I thought for sure I would let him know we have been ttc for 6 months so far and have not been successful. I was thrown off when he told me to see how it goes for a few more months and we will go from there.

Um, I'm 36! Time is ticking, lol. But he made it sound so easy...you have a regular cycle,, throw away the ovulation kits, have some wine and get busy mid-cycle, see what happens.

I feel that maybe I have been too focused on tests telling me when O day is - i've had the OPKs started the monitor, started temping. I'm going to try to take it easy and in a  few months if nothing, I'll make an appt to visit him for next steps.

Does he seem like a "too lax" dr?

Re: TTC question

  • How easy did you get pregnant with your first?

If in a few months nothing happens,  I would go to an RE. Do you need your OB to give you a referral to an RE for insurance purposes?  If not, I would start researching RE's in your area and just make an appt with him/her.

I get annoyed by Dr's, who should know better, say 'just relax' when you've been TTC for a bit.

  • Ditto everything chicken said!  I would be ready to move onto an RE if you don't get a BFP in a month or two (at the longest).   GL!

  • I'm shocked that a doctor would say that to a 36 year old woman, who has been trying for 6 months.  His mentality is fine, for some, and definitely women in their 20s but lets face it, facts are facts and clearly it's not as easy to get pregnant as it was earlier in our life.  So, if you have the patients to keep trying on your own go for it, otherwise, I'd make an appointment with an RE.  GL!!!
  • Make at appt with a RE asap.   There is no harm only help in it!  You'll get a bunch of tests and you'll have a much better picture of where you are.  All the diagnostic stuff is usually covered with insurance.  I just feel like we can only be our own advocates.  Power to the proactive women!!!   Good luck!

  • Oh yeah it is the "don't worry" pep talk. I had it from my GP and I was 38 telling her that it wasn't happening for us. However, she did refer me to a OB,right away which was great except He wanted more trying I think sometimes the DR's just don't believe that "we" are trying....blah blah...sometimes you have to say point blank what you want!!!!!  I want a specialist....and I want you to move to "IUI, IVF  whatever" Please!

It only took like 2-3 cycles for my first, so I guess that is why I'm concerned. I'm going to research some REs so I have this ready when it's time.

  • IMO your Dr is way too lax.  You are your own best advocate and if I knew then what I know now I would have demanded way better care than I received.  I wasted way too much time on a crappy Dr/RE.  If trying on your own feels right to you for a few more months great, but don't let another 1/2 a year slip by to be seen again.  GL to you!!!

  • I think at 36, 6 months is reasonable although it doesn't feel that way in your mind.  At 38, my OB said to wait 6 months.

  • get yourselt to an RE now! what do you have to lose?

It took us two cycles to get pg with our first. we've been trying for #2 for 10 cycles. if you're over 35 and have been trying for at least 6 months, it's time to see a specialist.

do you really want to go a few months more trying on your own, only to regret not seeing a specialist sooner?

sorry to be so blunt, but it's tough love time. your doc seems way too relaxed to me. you're your own best advocate.

  • This is the Dr. version of the "just relax and it will happen" speech.  Total crap.  He of all people should know that sometimes it's not that easy, especially condering age and number of unsuccessful TTC cycles.  I would call an RE and see how long it would take to get in..........make the appt. now (for a future date) even if you choose to try it on your own the next few cycles.......that way you won't have to wait to get in when you're ready to see a specialist.  Looking back, I would've asked for a referral much sooner!

    Good luck!
