Do people in your area have Jack and Jill showers?

I posted below about a wedding I am in. The bride had a traditional shower a few weeks ago and is now having a Jack and Jill shower. The way this type of party works is the bride and groom basically hold a pay event at a local hall. People are not "invited" per say, anyone who wants to attend buys a ticket at usually $20 a piece. The ticket includes some bar type food and beer. There is also a raffle. You can buy raffle tickets and win various prizes. Any money left the couple takes as profit.

Is this a regional type of thing? I'm in New England. I do not like to attend these events and did not have one as part of my wedding.

  • I have never been to one or known someone who has had one. I am in the Midwest.

  • Never had one, never been to one, and never would. Sounds tacky as hell.

I am currently in Ohio, but have been in the DC area for the last 9 years.

No. That sounds ridiculous! Why do they need two showers? And you have to pay for admission? Are you expected to bring a gift as well?!

  • I'm in Western MA and it's completely acceptable and the norm if you live south of the pike and never done if you live north of the pike. We live right on the line, so we've seen it both ways.
  • Yes, when I was younger I went to many 'Jack and Jill' or 'Stag and Doe' events.  Buy tickets, usually gaming tables, stuff like that.

Younger couples do it where I live.  It's  a nice, fun evening.

  • I've never heard of that and live in the Midwest.

  • Yes.  We had one too.

It's basically a stag where women (clothed ones) are welcome as well as men.

  • Um no...that sounds super tacky to me.

  • Never heard of the event you describe.  BUT I have heard of Jack & Jill showers.  Here, it just means that the bride and groom are both present and guests are not just women.  Otherwise it is the same as regular showers.  I wanted to have DH there at my shower (it was all half his), but he refused and as per tradition, I wasn't part of the planning process... sooooo it was just me wearing a paper plate hat made of ribbons =/
