what to expect @ hearing/speech eval?

DD's pedi recommended having her hearing and speech evaluated at her 2 year checkup.  Her hearing screening is scheduled for next Tuesday and speech evaluation the following Monday.  Just wondering if anyone else's DC has been through these and what I should expect.  TIA!

  • we have been trough this at the same age.

basically you will go with her in a room with her evaluator and they will sit down with her and playful ask her some questions... like colors, numbers, etc. maybe they will ask a few questions like 'is the ball behind the box?' the speech evaluation is probably the easier one out of the two. with the hearing our ds had to sit in a room (i was behind him) with a window and the evaluator on the other side (in a diff room) of the window asked him questions through a microphone. ds had headphones on and they checked his reaction to see if he heard them. there was a helper in our room to make sure he wouldn't touch buttons and such. but he had to sit for a while and listen... which was the hardest part for him.

    hope this helps.

  • Nothing too bad at all!  The hearing screen is a little different depending on where you are going but mainly they will either have headphones/earbuds on your little one or you will be in a sound proof room listening to tones and they will watch for any reaction from DC.  The speech eval is usually done with toys and through play at that age but it also depends on what test they are using.  Where are you having it done?  If at childrens then really make sure your insurance covers it b/c MOST do NOT.  Try early intervention.  If OH is it Help Me Grow and KY is First Steps.  Let me know if you have any other questions.  I am an early intervention Speech Therapist in KY :-)

Thanks, ladies!  I appreciate you sharing what you know!

Cat.. We are having both done at Children's.  I called our insurance yesterday and both are covered.  If she does need speech therapy, then they will cover 60 visits in a calendar year at 100%.  We are very lucky to have our insurance!
