Ferber for a 2 month old?

We did Ferber, but Miles was a year old at the time.  My cousin has a 2 month old and her doc said she could go ahead and start the "interval" method (he described Ferber method to her).  I told her that I was fairly sure that you weren't supposed to start Ferber until 6 months, but that I wasn't sure...but I was pretty sure 2 months was ridiculous.

Am I wrong?  I can't find my Ferber book to give her.  It mysteriously disappeared when we moved.  What do you know about the age recommendations for Ferber?

  • 2 months is WAY to young to start Ferber. 6 months sounds about right.

  • You are completely correct. You should NOT use ferber on any baby under 4 months old.

  • The book says that 4 months old is the earliest you should start.  Our pedi suggests Ferber, but only after you've read it first so you understand sleep, routines, etc. first.

I think situations like that are the reason Ferber gets a bad name a lot of the time.  Reading the book, gaining an indepth understanding of infant/toddler/child sleep and then establishing routines and using the progressive waiting approach are far different than what "Ferber" means to a lot of people (straight CIO, no time limits, etc.)

I know, right?!  That's what I said.  I told her I didn't want to tell her how to parent her child but that was basically abuse in my opinion and I was really disappointed in her pedi.

  • Most peds say 6 months or 4 for some who are ready.  We did this with Ella at 8 months and it worked wonders, but 2 months seems too young, they can't self sooth at that point.

  • We did it (successfully) with DS at 3.5 months.  I was definitely hesistant to start it then, but DH was convinced DS was ready...and hey, it worked, and it only took maybe 3 days with less than 30 minutes spent each day.  NOT a traumatic experience for anyone involved.

In part, it depends on the kid, but I can't imagine doing it any younger than that.  I'm guessing they're so sleep-deprived that they're grasping at straws.  Maybe you can make some (careful) suggestions to help them deal with this rough time instead?

  • We did Ferber at 5/6 months (dont' remember when) and it was so hard then.  I couldn't imagine doing that with a newborn.  I'm so sad for that baby.

Me too.  My little ones are almost three months, and thinking about letting them CIO makes me want to cry.

It is believed that babies can't cry to be manipulative (for lack of a better word) until at least four months.  So, when they DO cry, it is because they need something -- food, diaper, to be soothed, etc.  To let them CIO at 2 months is to just ignore their needs, IMO.
