Please send GL vibes to DH (long)

DH is a land surveyor who was laid off in Sept of last year.  He contacted every company in the area with over 1/3 of them out of business while the rest were barely staying afloat.  It has only gotten worse with more companies closing and more surveyors getting laid off.

So DH took a job with the Department of Transportation.  He works fairly crappy hours and usually comes home cranky and exhausted.  Partially from all of the rude, selfish, dangerous drivers and partially from the drudgery of his job.  Going from doing mental trig to using a spray paint can to mark where electric lines are barried I'm sure is depressing.  His paychecks are steady.  The health insurance is superior to his old, my medicine used to be $324 a month and is now $13.  So he sticks it out and tries to remain semi-positive.

Two weeks ago he had one of the heads of the district shadow him at work to fully understand what it is his job entails (there has been debate on cutting his position entirely to save funds).  While riding he asked DH what he did before DOT.  DH explained he was a surveryor and that's what he'd prefer to do.  The guy gave him the numbers of those in charge of the survey dept. so he could call and talk to them.

With the BFP he's been so distracted he hasn't yet.  His boss apparently got a phone call from the head of the survey dept yesterday.  Apparently the the guy who shadowed him called the survey dept himself!!  DH's boss said the survey guy will be calling DH today.  I'm trying really hard not to get my hopes up.  It has nothing to do with the increase salary, though it would be nice, it has more to do with him finally getting back into what he loves.  With normal hours and less dangerous locations.

So if you could please send positive thoughts it would be more than greatly appreciated.  I'd love to have my happy, laid back, less stressed husband back!!

  • Sending LOTS of T&P!!  My DH was let go just before we got our BFP and he's been sending out applications like crazy.  I know how stressful it is to see your husband so stressed out and cranky.

    Keep us updated!

  • Wishing him luck!  My hubs just lost his job too... perfect timing... NOT!  Hope all our hubbies are gainfully (and happily!) employed SOON!

  • i can completely relate. my dh is on the brink of a major work related transition and i am praying and praying it works out for him.  we could use better financial stability right now, but beyond that i feel the same way- more fulfilled and less stressed hubby is the most important thing!  my fingers are crossed tight for you!
  • We were very, very lucky he found work as quickly as he did.  He's one of those guys who is willing to do anything, learn any trade, for just about any pay.  After getting laid off he told me that if he couldn't find a job within 6 months he'd even re-enlist in the Marines (which he hated all four years of).

We are so very thankful that he has his job, which is why we try to be positive.  I don't know what it's like to stand on blacktop in 100+ degree weather while people drive by going 70+ mph or standing in major 8 lane interestions getting flipped off for being inconvient.  But I do know he's miserable and I'd do anything for him to be less bleh all the time.

Yay for hard working husbands! My DH just interviewed with a company he's dying to work for and has a follow up interview next week. He hates his job now but he had to take something after he got laid off last year too. I'm so proud of him for sticking it out, but I too really want him to be happier at work because that would make this baby thing so much easier down the road. Good luck to your DH!!

  • Good luck to yours too!

fingers crossed and I'll be sure to let you ladies know!!
