I love Gwendolen, but the ending might not work. And almost all my favorite girls names end in an/ine sound. Eleanor?
Or because of the literary reference "12 little girls" (although the book technically spelled it Madeline) you could do another literary name...

ETA: I also like Gabrielle, Penelope, Eloise, Vivienne, Genevieve. My favorite middle name in this case would have to be Anne. For boys, Alexander, Benjamin, Philip, Gabriel, Jonathan, Nathaniel, Samson, Zachariah.
