Worried about dehydration

Stella has been pretty sick all week with hand, foot and mouth disease (just the mouth part though).  Anyway, her little throat is so sore that it's been really difficult to get her to take in liquids (let alone food).  I'm really worried about dehydration.  She had barely any pee in her morning diaper and usually it's full to the rim.  I was able to get her to drink 3 oz. of formula and then some water from a regular cup.  I think the sippy hurts too much right now to suck.  Anyway, I need advice.  At what point do I take her in and see if she needs an IV?  Maybe I'm being overly cautious, but I feel so badly for her and am worried she's not getting enough fluids.

Re: Worried about dehydration

  • Will she eat something like watermelon?

  • She's not a big watermelon fan, but I had my mom try it with her yesterday.  No dice!  I think I"ll try it again today when I get home at noon.  She's been willing to suck on the mesh feeder with ice, but wouldn't do it yesterday.  I'm going to try that again today too.

  • I have no real experience with this but some suggestions I have heard for getting fluids in are - pedilyte popcicles or giving her some pediyte through a syringe to "force" some liquids.  Poor Stella....

I was going to suggest Pedialyte pops, too...if she's willing to kind of chew/suck on them.

Call your pedi though if she doesn't have enough wet diapers.  Feel better, Stella!

  • We bought her pedialyte pops a couple of days ago and she took a few tastes and decided it wasn't her thing.  I think I'll try breaking it up and turning it into more of a slushy and see if that works.
