If you put LO down for a nap but they don't fall asleep...

Do you let them stay in their crib as long as they aren't crying? DS should be taking his afternoon nap right now, but I hear him talking to himself. He's not upset, so I will leave him in there until he starts to cry or it's about the time he normally gets up from his nap. I figure even if he isn't sleeping, he needs some down time.

  • Yes, I do.  In fact, I can hear DD rubbing her hand on the wall right now but as long as she's not crying I'm not going in there!

  • As long as he isn't crying, I leave DS alone!  As you said, even downtime is good.  Plus, I felt like the more time he spent just hanging in his crib, the more he would like it and be comfortable there.

Now, I actually have a hard time getting him out in the morning!  He wants to roll around and play forEVER!

  • Yep.  DS is in his crib right now and I can hear him making all kinds of noises but he isn't crying.  He'll usually get tired and eventually fall asleep.

  • I'll go in after about 20min just to check if he's pooped, but put him right back in bed and leave the room quickly.

  • Yeah, I do. And often she eventually does fall asleep.

  • Yep, I leave him in there.
I'm not crazy, I've just been a very bad mood for the last 40 years!
  • I leave him in there. Yesterday, he talked for a while before he fell asleep.

  • As long as she is not crying I leave her. She usually runs her pacifier along the bars until she falls asleep, haha.

  • I just let him lie there and rest.  Unless he's upset, I don't get him out of bed during naptime.

  • Yep, we give them an hour of "down time" even if they don't fall asleep (which usually doesn't happen that often but lately it's been happening w/the afternoon nap sometimes b/c they're on the verge of transitioning to one nap). We follow HSHHC pretty closely with all things sleep-related; it's worked really well for us.

  • As long as she's not crying I leave her in there- better she try to get a nap rather than get overstimulated and get upset that way!
