So, Toppy is allergic to peanut butter.

I just gave him a pb sandwich for lunch (pedi said new guidelines are pb @ 1 is fine). Eyes swell up, red bumps all over. Benedryl goes right in.

Called treehouse, they gave me a higher dosage of benedryl to give and now we just sit back and wait. Any drooling or difficulting swallowing/ breathing and it's 911.

He's sitting right here w/ me (before you think, 'what the eff are you doing on the compy??') playing and reading the nest. Fingers crossed it's just an external rash.

**UPDATE** Still watching him, but all seems well. I had a minor panic when he started drooling and was seconds away from calling 911 (thank GOD I asked Jon if I could have his phone today. I lost mine before vacay and have been going w/o). Anyway, it seems that it was just toddler drool- not allergy drool.

That stinks that's he allergic though. I imagine there's a lot of stuff with peanuts in it or made in the same factory that peanut products are processed. Boo!

Oh no, I'm so sorry I hope it gets better, not worse, very fast!

The pediatric allergist we just saw for Teagan was ah-mazing - we all loved her. Dr. Kayser at 'Specially for Children. It took us a few months to get in with her but she was great. Thankfully, the world is much more peanut allergy friendly now than it was even 10 years ago. I'm sorry though, it sucks.

My eldest is allergic to peanut butter (tree nuts, in general) and I know what you are feeling!

It is scary! We used to have an "epi pen"...but it looks like we have been lucky enough that if when she comes in contact with the substance, benadryl works to stop the reaction. (happened 2x's)

We don't know if our other one is allergic. We could find out (probably should) but we just assume and treat her the same way. Probably not fair and I will hear about it in her therapy sessions when she grows up.

Don't feel bad. We had a 3 year old just last weekend - 1st PB ever - Really bad allergic reaction. Had to give the whole round of Zantac, Benadryl, Solumedrol and Epi. Age doesn't matter, they're either allergic or they're not. Really the only reason to wait until age 1 is not so that they'll magically not be allergic but that they can get all the high dose meds for allergic reaction. You can only give so much to a 6-12 month old without worrying about severe respiratory depression (not breathing).

PSA: All parents should have Benadryl in the house for just such an occasion. I'm glad I did when Emily reacted to something I gave her recently.

So, the nurse just called back to check on him. She was saying that (fortunately) he was just having a topical reaction to the peanut butter and that we should keep it out of the house until 2 and then we can try to reintroduce (when he gets it all in his mouth, rather than all over his face).

Since Emily gets into everything Abby has, I've switched Abby to Sun Butter (sunflower). I thought I wouldn't like it but I love it. I think I've eaten half of it out of the jar with a spoon. The only thing I've noticed is that it darkens quickly. Like if I made Abby a sammy for MDO, it's "dark" when I get her leftovers out at 2-3pm.

Reminds me to check to see if I have Benadryl. I think mine was recalled, but I kept it around since I haven't bought a generic brand one yet to replace it and I don't want to be completely out.

And man, I fear a peanut allergy in Julia's MDO class next year -- it is the *only* thing she eats for lunch and I'm in for a world of hurt if she can't eat it. Of course, the kid who accidentally eats peanut butter and has a reaction is in for much more of a world of hurt, so of course I understand.
