Parenting after a Loss

s/o Cereal...

I bought some in anticipation of our 4 month appointment.  Charged up the video camera.

Then our doctor said "no".

She claims that recent studies show that g.i. tract infections are more common in babies who start solids too soon.  She said this was especially true for breastmilk babies.

We are to hold off until 6 months.

Boo, hiss.

I hate how different doctors have different opinions... and it is sooo confusing.  Alas, I like my doctor and trust her... and it makes sense.... but ....

Re: s/o Cereal...

  • I agree with hating how different doctors have different opinions which make it much more confusing.  You'd think they could all agree on similar guidelines.  My pedi told me to start cereal, but now I'm considering holding off a bit.

  • my pedi did say that we could start cereal IF Harper wasn't sleeping well and appeared more hungry than formula/milk could satisfy.  She is doing great so we are following the doctor's advice because I guess we are assuming "if it ain't broke don't fix it:)" in addition to following her medical advice:)

  • Well, DD sleeps fine and doesn't appear more hungry after formula so maybe I'll go ahead and wait.  And you are so correct with if it ain't broke don't fix it b/c.  :)  I don't need to be making changes if things are still on the right track.

  • Our pedi said pretty much the same thing... wait until 6 months if she has a "virgin" stomach (has only had BM)

Though she did say that around 5 months if we thought she was still hungry or was interested in our food then we could slowly start...

I was excited to start but then I figured my Dr knows best and I worked SO hard to build my supply back up, I might as well use it huh!

  • Its confusing how Pedi's have diff opinions, but I will add my 2 cents. We started Cereal with Kylie (rice only) at 4 1/2 months, introduced oatmeal at 5 months. She decided she hated rice and would only eat oatmeal from there on out. 5 1/2 months we did Avacado as her very first solid. She was an EBF baby before then. She has never had an issue with anything. I also thinned the cereal with so breastmilk so that helped too. GL with whatever you choose
