Success after IF

Ever have a hideous bruise from a blood draw?

I had my beta 6 days ago and have the most hideous bruise left over.  The lab tech told me I might bruise (and I have before), but this is over-the-top.  It's all around the left side of my vein, dark reddish-purple.  Reminds me of the kind of bruising I saw on my grandparents with their paper-thin skin in their later years, and was horrified by.

Is this normal?  I've been putting Arnica gel on it today and it hurts when I touch it (but I never would have known that had I not touched it - obviously it's in a place that does not normally get touched).

  • yup, a lot. I tend to avoid them if I don't press super hard post-draw. Even though they say "put pressure on it!" She may also had to have dug around for a rolling vein or something, and knew she was going to cause a bruise.  vampire ;-)

no kidding?!  funny thing is, this wasn't particularly rough or painful, just a run-of-the-mill blood draw...i've had much worse with very little bruising.

  • yep looked like a drug addict during IF treatments-LOL.  I bruise easilly and was on lovenox (bllod thinner) which didn't help the matter.  Hang in there, luckily the brusing didn't take super long to heal.

Yup, I had my last beta last Monday so nearly a week and a half and I'm still getting "What's That?" comments when people see my bruise.  Even the nurse at the REs office asked me about it today and then was horrified that it happened at their office.  For most of last week I had that bruise and another one going on the same arm - I really looked like a junkie.

Mine doesn't hurt though - that part doesn't seem normal about your bruise.  I hope it clears up soon.

  • I still have a small tiny bruise from my 3 hour gd test 2 weeks ago. No clue what makes it bruise- but rubbing it actually helps it go away faster.

  • my arms were covered in bruises when I was going through my IVF cycles for DS.  The bruises took forever to heal.

  • Yes it can happen. I have had the worst bruises from giving blood. The worst being when my vein blew and I had a huge purple and brown bruise for at least 5 days. So pretty...
  • I had this happen one time when they went through the vein and had to try again.  My arm was bruised from wrist to shoulder and it hurt!  I called my nurse and asked if it was okay (she just said it happens sometimes) and I noticed after that they were a lot more careful when drawing my blood, so I'm thinking she must have said something.
It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!

  • I normally bruise pretty easily when giving blood because my veins roll and are usually hard to find.  I looked awful during my IVF cycles.  I just had THE WORST bruise ever when I had my 3hr glucose test last month.  It was huge, totally black and took a month to go away!  Everyone kept asking me what happened.  My dr. told me to put a heating pad on it to help it heal a bit faster - you might want to try that.
