s/o: switched to toddler bed and naps are horrible

I was just reading a post below about converting to a toddler bed and some of you said the naps are horrible/the kids don't nap. What do you do on days like that? The reason I'm asking is DD has always been a wonderful napper/sleeper, but for the past few weeks that has all changed, she would scream for a long time when we were trying to put her to bed, then only my DH started putting her down at night and she'd go right to bed. Naps are a different story, since I'm the one home with her and she refuses to even lay down in her crib. She has tried to escape from her crib a few times, but only climbs up to the top of the rail and just sits there crying, waiting for somebody to get her down.

We tried a crib tent, I *think* she hated it, so I was thinking of maybe trying out the toddler/twin bed. So how do you deal with the days your DC doesn't nap? Let them out and just let them fall asleep somewhere else later? Make them to stay in their room for some "quiet time"? Sit there with them?

  • DD is a wonderful sleeper in her toddler bed but yeah naps are different.Unless she is really tired, i would have her lay down and I would read a couple of stories. I'm off with her for the summer and the weekends. she usually will fall asleep on my bed or the couch and I would just put her in her bed. Sitting with them helps and maybe rubbing her back

  • My DD was always a bad napper.  For the most part, she would go into her crib easily enough after some quiet play and a few stories, but would play in there instead of settling down to sleep once I/the nanny left the room.  If we were lucky the play was quiet but eventually she would start jumping up and down in the crib, throw her blankets and lovies out, and mess with the curtains and blinds (which she could reach from the crib).  On good days she would do that for anywhere from 30-45 min then finally fall asleep and sleep for 2+ hours.  I'd say for the past few months she actually slept during naptime about 3-4 times a week.

Now that we had to move her out of the crib, naps are non-existent.  Our nanny has gotten her to fall asleep twice over the last week and a half by sitting in the room with her and rubbing her back, stroking her hair, etc., and just basically soothing her to sleep, which took a pretty long time.  If we try the old routine of wind down and stories, she is up as soon as we leave the room and although she can't get out, she plays and pretty much destroys her room - not exactly resting time.  That said, we are sticking with it for a while yet in the hopes that she is still getting used to her new freedom outside the crib and may yet start to sleep again.  She really needs it;  she has always been a really cheerful kid but lately she's been much more fussy and grumpy and I think it's lack of sleep.

Yikes, poor thing! After she doesn't nap, do you just let her be or do you try to put her down for a short nap a little while later, in hopes that she's tired herself out? Or just do an earlier bedtime?
