NBR - Catholics - why offer your baby to Mary?? Confused!

My MIL was showing me pictures the other day of her pregnancy... one of those pictures were her in front of a statue of Mary with a bunch of flowers... she said she offered her baby to Mary.

I'm trying to learn as much about Catholics as possible for my husband... he really wants our baby to grow up Catholic so I'm trying to learn along the way.... so when I asked my MIL what the point of offering your baby to Mary was.... she really didn't say anything and she was truely just speechless.

I tried googling this but I can't find any information on it anywhere... does anyone know what this is all about? Can someone please explain this to me?

TIA!

Re: NBR - Catholics - why offer your baby to Mary?? Confused!

  • I'm Catholic...went to a Catholic school and now teach in one and have never heard of this.  I mean, obviously, Mary is the mother of Jesus and is considered a mother to all of us BUT I've never heard of this "offering."

Sorry, I'm not really of any help.

  • I am Catholic and I have never heard of "offering your baby to Mary".  Maybe she meant that we ask Mary to watch over our LO and protect them and help keep them safe since Mary is considered to be the Mother of all Mothers.
  • hmm... well my husbands family is hispanic... do you think maybe it could be a hispanic thing? I know hispanics have done alot of things differently in the catholic denomination.... maybe thats what it is?

  • Is she mexican? My Dh's family is and I feel like this is something I have heard of them doing. Actually during baptisms, most of them have had another Godmother to present the baby ( I believe to Mary)
  • LOL it must be your MIL's thing, not a Catholic thing. I never heard of that

  • Never heard of this.
  • We offered flowers to the Virgin Mary statue during our wedding to ask for a blessing over our marriage. I'm assuming it's a similar thing. Mary is considered the patron saint of mothers so it's a way of asking her to bless the baby.
