Success after IF

What's our next step...

Didn't realize this board existed. I originally went right to the infertility board out of habit. This is great!

Haven't been on here in a while because I got pregnant and had my son in August of 2009. I'm sorry if this ends up being pretty long!

To give a brief history, we began trying originally about December of 2007, but quickly realized we were going to be heading to a fertility specialist. I was only getting a period about 4 times a year. After months of testing, they found several few small issues preventing pregnancy.

We did three cycles. We used injections for the last and that was the one that worked. My son was born as I said in August 2009.

We wanted very little space between our children, but with our situation who knows where we stand now. I breastfed him till just over 6 months. I knew this was delaying my chances of getting pregnant again, but wanted to do that for him anyway. We were TTC anyway (you never know right), but we have been more actively trying ever since with no success thus far.

Here's is where my real current issue lies. My period did come back with some regularity since I stopped breastfeeding. My cycles have been 34, 37 and 38 days. Not bad considering my past. I am currently awaiting her arrival on day 41. I have taken two tests and they are negative.

We aren't sure that we can afford to go back to the fertility specialist just yet nor do we know if we even need to. Maybe we will get pregnant on our own, but how long do we wait to find out? I am really struggling with "the next step".

I guess I am looking for advice or an opinion of what is going on. Maybe your situation was similar. Also, what would the fertility specialist do for me after having gone through the process once? Do we start from scratch like the first time? If the process is different, maybe it is something we should consider.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Re: What's our next step...

  • I think you wait as long as you can tolerate before going back.  Since you are getting a period now, you could chart/use OPKs and keep trying on your own.  But if you want your next baby soon, you might want to set a time limit on it, say 6 months or whatever.

I don't know what your RE would want, whether they would want to start over again with testing, but my guess is that you would go back to the treatment that worked for you.  If you are OOP, I know Gonal-f is expensive, but it worked for you the first time, and you likely wouldn't have to do too many rounds.

    Good luck.
