Tricare and Induction

Does Tricare cover inductions? Just wondering.. My doctor was discussing this option with me due to the baby being on the larger side and my hips being on the tiny size. DH is 6 ft 3 and at birth was almost 10 pounds, his brother was almost 11. So we are anticipating a big baby in my tiny 5 ft 3 size 0 pre-pregnancy hips. Anyone know if tricare covers this? I'm thinking worse case scenarios in my head.

Re: Tricare and Induction

  • I don't know if they cover elective inductions, but they will if it's coded as medically necessary.

  • They covered mine but I was overdue so I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it.  I can't imagine that they wouldn't but then again, nothing really surprises me when it comes to Tricare.
  • i'm sure if they think the baby is going to be too large to have a safe delivery that they can use the right code and have it covered... if not, try talking to another nurse/physician. My experiences with tricare have varied greatly depending on who is helping me.

This.  I was overdue with no signs of DS coming on his own.

  • I would think would be somewhat elective.

Tricare will only cover it iff mediclly necessary. You doctor should know when he can induce so that they will cover it.

  • They do...I was induced due to GD, but I know another spouse who was induced with all 3 of her kids, none of them was medically necessary, just doctor preference.

  • Most inductions are considered medically necessary (even if they technically are not) and are covered by insurance (Tricare included). Given your reason for induction you should not be worried at all about this being covered by ins. I am a L&D RN so I see this all the time! And don't worry, its always you teeny tiny girls who push those big babies out with no problems...It's amazing!
