PSA: High-Lighting Your Hair at Home...

Is not a "piece of cake," as many of my friends are constantly trying to convince me.

Look out, Ronald McDonald... here I come!

It looks like you did a good job! I think they usually put on a toner now and that makes everything really nice. That's the part I don't really understand-how to make the toner and how long to leave it on and stuff.

All over color is fairly easy and I do it regularly, but I know from experience that highlighting at home can be  a disaster. I've messed mine up plenty of times and a toner from Sallys always helped.

I do it in the winter, sometimes.  I just use the paint on highlight kit.  It is pretty easy and has come out well.  I have pretty light hair to begin with, so it looks normal when I do it.  I have probably done it 3 or 4 times in 10 years, I try to do it so it doesn't need to be "maintained" because I can't take that.

Between posting proud pics of how messy your home is, to how your DIY hair came out, mamatojackson you are by far my new favorite nestie/bumpie.  :)

    BTW

My home until 5 minutes ago looked 10x worse than your pics ever did, due to my exhaustion of overdoing a good weekend amongst close friends and a new gym membership.

Everything except DS, DH and Dinner was put on the to-do list for "later" this weekend. ::hangs head due to my SAHM Fail::

Congrats on getting it all done, though!  After fixing the orange disaster on my head, I have some cleaning to do, myself!

The professional stylist in me is just cringing at the thought of this.  Get a toner ASAP!  If I knew a bit more about how it turned out I would be happy help you figure out what to get.  I'm a trained color specialist.

Hey there!  Yeah, it went seriously awry.

I ended up going out and buying a box of dark blonde dye... about a shade darker (but not wretched looking) than the orange - Put it all over and that corrected things.

    Phew.

I would like to attempt the blonde again sometime though... so any tips are appreciated!

I would make sure whatever kit you are using has 20 volume peroxide to go with the bleach.  If your hair is previously colored it has to be bleach, color won't lighten it right.  Have a toner on hand, something in the level 8 or 9 range with a neutral to ashy base.  Check it before you rinse it.  I think most "home" kits say to leave it on like 20-30 minutes but it certainly can be left on longer as long as it doesn't dry out.  Make sure you cover it so it doesn't dry out.  If you want it to go faster, blast a hair dryer at your hair with some sort of plastic covering it.  Lol, anything else?

I'm happy with the way it is right now but will be trying to highlight (blonde!!!!) again in a couple of months and will need some serious help. lol

I need to find out what I did wrong this time and not do it next time. ;)  I mixed the Loreal "Blue" - Something packets with a Walla developer (30).  Pulled hair through the cap, puit it on.  Left it on for about 50 minutes - the color looked good - Was just the shade I wanted it.  Got in, rinsed, and then all of a sudden was this awful orange...

I have colored my own hair for years. I would totally suggest Sally's and doing an all over color.

Just know that the developer is in levels. 30 is a lower level. If you are wanting to lift several hair levels (think brown to blonde) you might need to up your developer. Also, look into Sally's Ion hair color in the high lift. I love it and have had no issues at all.

I just read the stylists post. What I am talking about is just for all over color. I know nothing about bleach. I am just speaking about my experience w/ all over and am not a professional.
