3rd Trimester

wdyt of this name for a boy?

Sacha as a short version of Alexander (very common in Russia).

We like the name Alexander but we don't like Alex. I also would love to have a European name because of my own background and there are a lot of boys named Sacha here but no girls.

But I also know that in the US, Sasha is more common for a girl and I don't want him to get teased, since that is where we will live most of the time. Of course, Alexander would be on the birth certificate.

Just interested in hearing some American input on this since here in Europe everyone thinks that Sacha is a normal name for a boy.

Thanks. :)

  • I'm only familiar with it as a girl's name, as you mentioned, but I really like the name Alexander.

  • My DH is from Russia so needless to say we know quite a few Sashas.  That being said, I guess the American in me doesn't care for it too much and I end up calling the guys Alex anyways b/c they go by both names.
  • Sacha Baron Cohen (Ali G) is DHs hero, but I think that his fame will be long gone by the time your son is in school, and I fear your boy may be teased.  But I love Alexander, it made it to our short list.

  • I think it would be fine - it's a good name and the nickname is a neat nod to your heritage.  I think Naomi Watts' son is Alexander and goes by Sacha.
  • I like the name, but you're right - it's not too common for a boy here (the only Sashas I know are girls).  If you like Alexander, but not Alex, you'll have to teach your son to correct people when they call him Alex.  I have a name with a common nickname, and from kindergarten on, just said I preferred to be called by my full first name.  Do you like the nickname Zander of Xander?

  • I have heard of Zander/Xander but I am not too fond of that. The reason I was looking for a short is because going by Alexander everyday seems too formal. I do know of Liev Schreiber's son Sacha. His name gave me the idea. :)

Just a nod to my European background WOULD be nice but DH already shot down the French spelling Nicolas (Nee-cola) as well as some other Euro versions of names. :)

I am off for now. My mom and I are leaving for Frankfurt now and tomorrow morning I will catch my plane from there back to the US. At least I scored a bulkhead seat for the 10.35h flight!

  • I love the name Alexander, but I'm not a fan of Sacha as a nn.  My sister's name is Sasha, so it just feels like a girls name to me.
  • I like it and given that you are Russian people will "get it."

P.S. - I was thinking about you the other day. Did your DH ever get better after telling you that he needed space?

  • I love it because of my own heritage, but he will be mercilessly teased because of it.
  • If my son were going to live in the US I wouldn't. Here it's considered a feminine sounding name, and kids find enough stuff to tease eachother about without giving them any ammo.
  • I really like it.  If you're boy is cool enough (and he will be!) he can pull off any name!   Smile
  • I like it. There is some potential for teasing with it, but if he's a confident little boy it should be ok I think.
  • I would think it was a girl if I saw the nickname without the child. Why not just call him Alexander?
