Postpartum Depression

I'm a mess

I don't even know where to start. I'm 33 years old, and this is my second child. He's seven weeks old, but he was nearly a month premature.

I did NOT have PPD with my first born. I was 21 when I had him.

My emotions are all over the place. Sometimes, I snap at my fiance and my older son for no reason. Other times, I'm a weepy whiny mess. I feel so inadequate as a mom when I can't get my LO to stop crying. I had to stop breast feeding when he was 3 weeks old due to a build up of scar tissue in my breasts from piercings, so I feel crappy because I can't do that for my son.

I FREAKED on my mom (who's been nothing but supportive) last Friday, screaming at her over the phone for not answering the phone when I called (I ended up calling back three times before she answered). She did not deserve the way I flipped out on her, even though she understands why I did it.

I have serious cabin fever, because I live in a third floor walk up and can't physically carry the stupid stroller down the stairs to even go out for a walk with the baby. (Before anyone asks, I have fibromyalgia, and can't do a lot of things. I'm trying to combat this with yoga)

Anyone has any advice? How do I stop feeling this way? My OB/GYN won't even entertain the idea of giving me meds or anything, and I can't afford therapy to combat it. I'm just a mess.

Re: I'm a mess

  • Why won't you OB give you meds? I would be trying to find another doctor. I know Fibro also has a lot to do with depression anyway, and you're dealing with a lot on top of that.

  • That is definitely a lot to deal with.  Like PP said, I would try and find another OB.  I guess I don't know why your OB won't put you on meds for PPD?  Unless there is something else, there should be no reason not to put you on meds for it.  This may sound like a silly suggestion, but can you just sit outside for a while with LO to get out of the house?  If you can't carry the stroller, at least get outside with LO for a while that way.  Just a thought.  GL!!!!

I agree. Serotonin levels have a lot to do with depression, and sunlight will boost those levels. Unless you're like me and you're somewhere it's WAY too hot/humid.

  • I have some issues with health as you do. I got like you did with most my girls. This so round I started taking them on walks. Being outside has helped. If you can't take the baby, just go by youself. Ask your mom to watch the little one and get out but don't go shopping or run errands, just go outside.

I get cabin fever and know how you feel. I would just really make use of your good days. Today was an inside day. We have those. I am hoping that tomorrow is an outside day.

Also, I had major back issues with #2 and still was able to wear the baby. If you can wear her get a sling. It is so handy, they love it and you can get out without a stroller. I will wear my 2 month old, stroll my 2 yr old and the 4 yr old walks.  Works.

I agree with the pp. Get a second opinion and keep up with the yoga. If that doesn't work I would try another work out. I find that my energy comes from moving. When I quit I start getting upset.
