Babies: 0 - 3 Months

How do you bathe your baby?

Hi everybody!  I haven't given birth yet, but I was curious: I'm looking at those baby tubs, and I wondered who has one, and if they ended up using it, or bathing the LO some other way (sponge baths, baths with parent, etc).  I'm just trying to figure out if it's worth the money.  TIA!

Re: How do you bathe your baby?

  • I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Puj tub because it fits in pretty much any sink (I use it in the kitchen, to save our backs)..it's foam-ish so it conforms, she doesn't slide, and there's a drain at the bottom.  Couldn't recommend it more.  And yeah - I use it every single day.

  • Buy the simplest tub you can find.  You don't need all the gismos.  The first week or so we sponge bathed DS.  Then we teamed up to bath him in his tub.  Now I can handle it by myself.  We put the tub in the kitchen sink so it is at a comfortable height.
  • We use the First Years bathtub. It works great. I feel very comfortable using it. We were even able to use it with the sling to give her a sponge bath before her umbilical cord stem fell off.

  • We did sponge baths for first 10 days or so but since then have used our basic baby tub with the sling feature (until he has better head control).  When he can sit up on his own we'll move him to the inflatable ducky tub (I think my DD was about 6 months old and ADORED the duck until we forced her into the regular tub).

Our tub also fits in the sink (but we do it in the reg tub cuz DD likes to "help" with his bathtime) and I agree that the extra gizmos are just silly.

  • We have a baby tub, someone gave it to us before we had DS1...it's under the crib someplace...we used it once.

Until the umbilical stump came off we just wiped them down with wipes.

After the umbilical cord came off we just take them into the shower with us.  Easy peasy and both my boys LOVE a shower.

Same here. My DD loves her tub/bath time, definitely worth it!

  • I put my LO on a sponge and that's it. Works for him and I. Once he gains head control I'll use the Euro tub.
  • I use the Euro Tub, also known as the Spa Tub and the Tummy Tub.  You can find them on ebay for about 45$ and they're so worth it.  You can use them from birth on up, and it automatically curls them in the fetal position, they stay bouyant AND they're always submersed so dd never gets cold.  It's a very interesting concept, and definitely worth it if you're willing to spend the money.  I love mine.  (I have the Whale of a Tub too, but it's just too big and bulky)

We use the Primo Euro tub. It's big, but a friend gave it to us and it's pretty great. It's molded so we just sit DD in it (on top of a bath sponge - my fave thing! - for less slippage) and she's totally secure, so I can use two hands to bathe her. (And of course that doesn't mean I leave her alone, and am watching her constantly of course, just that I have two hands on her and don't have to hold her w/ one and bathe her w/ the other.)

We borrowed a baby tub from a friend...used it once and DS hated it, so it's been showers since then.  I think he'll probably like it more once he can sit up a bit, so we'll probably give it another try soon.  Baby tubs are one of those things that people hate to store, so before buying one I would put out a call to friends and family and see if anyone has one you can borrow (or check out consignment sales/craigslist...a baby tub is very easy to clean, so wouldn't be a bad thing to buy used).  At least then you can find out what works for you and what doesn't, and you'll know more what to look for if you decide to purchase one later.

  • We use the little pink tub from the hospitol because she's still getting just sponge baths. Next week I think we'll move on to using the sink or tub with a small infant seat we got. I think it's from Summer Infant. Who knows how that will go? I'm hoping better than the sponge baths because I feel like she is constantly cold.
  • Our baby loves the Whale bathtub (fisher price I think).  It has a removable insert that we used up until he was 4 months old.  With the insert, he was able to "sit up" from 3 weeks till now...now he's long enough he doesn't need it anymore.  The bad thing is that it is very bulky, but we just store it in the kitchen and I don't mind since he loves it so much!
  • We are using a Puj Tub now in the bathroom sink. We will probaby go to the kitchen sink soon to give us more room to bathe him.   I have really liked it.  And we have the Leachco Bath n' Bumper Tub-Cushioned Bath Support for when he get older.

  • I have no idea what ours is called - it was $30.  It looks like a bouncer but it goes in the tub/sink.  We do our baths in the tub and fill the water high enough so his back is submerged but that's it.  We put a wet wash cloth on his belly so he doesn't get cold.  His bath lasts all of a few a minutes so he never seems cold.

  • we have just a nofrills baby tub with a sling.  the first years brand i believe from BRU.  We used it once.  When DS first came home after the NICU we still sponge bathed because of his umbilical cord.  Once it fell off we put him in the sling in the tub.  He HATED it.  He screamed the entire time because he was too cold.

So I bring him in the tub with me. I'm a little nervous to try a shower because of how slippery they get and my son has muscle tone issues.

  • $20 tub from BabiesRUs with an infant sling ... fits in the kitchen sink = perfect.
  • We have the Fisher Price "Whale of a tub" tub and I love it! We sit it in our tub and fill the baby tub with appropriate temp water and bathe him while he reclines in the tub (it has a place for infants to sit). We got it as a baby gift, but it definitely would have been worth our money!

PS- You can put it on a kitchen sink also.

this, it's the First Years tub. We bathed him in both the bathroom and kitchen sinks, but he's so long that he was getting all squished up. We use the tub on the kitchen sink and it's great.

  • We've been using the Tummy Tub and love it!  Got it for $39.99 on amazon after reading the good reviews.  Very glad we did because it's the only tub that actually keeps the baby covered in warm water and happy.  Instead of a quick scrub down, bath time is actually fun for both of us :-).  We use it in the kitchen sink, so no bending and near fresh water.  It's super compact and lightweight, so easy to store anywhere and you can use it for a long time unlike most tubs, because it works well when they can sit up.
