Bfers..side lying position ?

Anyone got this position down? I keep trying it with Beau but he doesn't latch on very well. Do I need to wait until he gets a little bigger and has more practice with his latch before the side lying position will work for us?

Re: Bfers..side lying position ?

  • We had some latching issues and while I tried really hard to make it work for us early on, we didn't get it down pat until around 6-8 weeks. Keep trying, though, b/c it's so easy to just put them in bed and dreamfeed in the middle of the night. GL!

Definitely gets better with age. He'll get it! :)
  • It gets much easier as they get a little bigger.  The majority of my feedings were side lying for both kids and it really worked for us.  I used my snoogle with Natalie and it really eased positioning.  I didn't have it with my son so I used two pillows - one under my head and one under my shoulder/upper back.

yes - didn't really work for us until Sam was 2-3 months old.

Erika didn't get it till she had good head control, at about 10 weeks. Before then, she was too floppy and I couldn't lie just right and get her head just right, and do all this in the dark!!! (Because if I turned the light on, it'd wake her)

  • I was able to do it some in the beginning, but it definitely got easier by 2 months.  My LC called it a "varsity" position, so don't be too worried if it's not working yet.

  • Jones and I have done it a few times but I'm finding that it's easier for me to just sit up in bed for now... His latch is not right when laying down usually and I don't want to make my nipples even more angry
  • Honestly, it has never really worked for us.  I tried in the beginning, at 2-3 months... it just isn't comfortable for either of us.  I hope you find something that works for you!

  • we failed miserably at this position until about 2 weeks ago.   and even then it wasn't great.   but now it is our go-to for our early morning feeding in bed.   it'll come with time!
Brought to you by IVF, ICSI, limited fert, and oocyte cryopreservation.

  • it definitely comes w/time and experience...once you find that your baby is able to self-latch when you are sitting up (where you're not guiding the head at all), then i'd try the side lying position again. i found that once she mastered latching, then we were able to do this...and it's almost all we do now :) my favorite way to nurse her.
