My nurse called and said both were negative. Great. I've had a couple abnormal paps years ago, and were told that I probably just carry the HPV virus like millions of people do. Whatever.
But I didn't know they tested for HPV.... is that new?

It's new my OBGYN asks his patients before testing or offering the vaccine. DH and I were both tested during our IVF cycles as part of the normal STD testing my RE performs neither of us are carriers no big surprise there DH and I were both virgins when we got married.
I usually turn down the test at my yearly GYN checkup no point in testing for something I know I don't have and no point in getting vaccinated.

So here is the thing...I've had bad pap smears and HPV linked bad ones in the past. It is kinda in your system forever and could flare up anytime. I think 80% of ppl have HPV - men and women. don't even get me started on the vaccine. I lost my son because of all my pre-cancer cervical issues (LEEP, possible biopsy, freezing surgery,e tc). I am likely going to get my daughter the vaccine when she is older.
Anyway, I had a pap smear this pregnancy and it was bad and they said that since my HPV was negative on it, they would just leave it alone. Had I had a bad pap smear with HPV postiive (like I said, most ppl including me have it so just because I'm negative means that the bad pap was caused by something else - beign pg, just cause, but it *could* have been caused by HPV) - they would have gone in there - very high risk for me due to my cervical issues, cerclage etc. So for now, my dr will wait until I give birth and look at it then...He told me this when I asked him.
So my answer is that I think they test ppl in the past who have HPV or a bad pap smear which are most likely tied to HPV, they do the testing on all future paps. I think on ppl who never had bad pap smears they only test for HPV if it comes back BAD, but I am not entirely sure. I overheard someone at the drs office asking about this and it sounded like she was going to be tested for HPV anyway - not sure if she ever had a bad pap.
