Eco-Friendly Family

Has anyone thought about Christmas toys/presents yet?

I know, it's early:) But everyone starts asking soon and I want to be prepared with things that I really want her to have rather than a bunch of junk and a million things. I did an Amazon list last year to give family ideas and that seemed to work well.

Things on the list(not really just for Christmas, but more things that we'd eventually):

-a set off wooden blocks

-a table and chairs

-a play kitchen

-an easel and art supplies

-anything Haba or Melissa and Doug

-a wooden rocking horse

It's all kind of big things, but I don't really feel like she needs any more toys right now at all! So - what's on everyone's list for babies/toddlers that are more eco-friendly? I know I'll get a million for ideas and I love to have ideas in my head for when grandparents and greatgrandparents are asking!

Re: Has anyone thought about Christmas toys/presents yet?

  • I'm going to make some of the fabric beach balls.  He definitely doesn't need anymore toys though.  I'm also going to get the whole family some klean kanteens for Christmas.  I have no idea what to get the hubs, but I'll figure it out.  I know for sure some educational toys, but I have yet to figure out what yet!

  • I am just asking for crayons/markers/chalk or music (DD loves music) or books. We have so many toys, and she has never really played with any of them. I did get the learning tower with art easel recently, so she just needs her own drawing stuff

I have a weird kid, she would rather draw, read a book or dance/sing, but she has never really played with toys, so I told people to stop buying them.

  • Oh and we also made a wish list at oompa.com for relatives that ant suggestions.

  • ooh! I've definitely thought about it!

I'm trying to spread the word that we DO NOT want plastic toys...

I want to register somewhere for the next size up for diaper covers and diapers. I think oompa toys has a wish list too - so I might do one of those. And I want to set up a 529 account for her so that I can just ask for contributions for that, as DH and I are not able to start saving for her education while I'm SAH.

I'm planning on sending out holiday cards with a picture of her and this information. Tacky, maybe. But I know people want to know, so why not?

  • So far on her list is a wagon.  I know it's not a lot, but it's all I have so far.  Also, books...lots of books!  I'm trying to be super specific, because I find otherwise people like my Grandmother try to freelance, and it's never good.  I have a closet full of horrid dresses that never fit DD at the right time (and seriously, I'm not putting my baby in a fancy dress to do groceries!).  My family is huge on lists, so that makes things easier.
  • We got my dd a really nice Christmas stocking off etsy.  My dh has had his since he was born and we want to have our dd have the same tradition.  We are also thinking about a cloth ball, wooden blocks, clothes, shoes, and maybe diapers.  I found this site today https://www.nmctoys.com/index.html that features toys made in the US and Europe and has a pretty big selection of non-plastic stuff and a small eco/green selection as well. I am also thinking about creating a list for the relatives to avoid a ton of plastics but have not gotten around to it yet.

  • I have a dreammmm.....

I want to make each child a Minkee sheet/blanket set.  Because both of my kiddos are crazy sleepers and toss their blankets all over the bed, I'm going to sew the blanket part of the set to one side and the end of the sheet (like a sleeping bag...sort of).  Josh likes minkee with a thick pile, and Joanie likes minkee dot.  So, I'll make each of their gifts from their favorite kind of minkee.  If I'm feeling ambitious, I'll make them each a pillow, too.  And perhaps a lovie...

  • we're asking for $$ for kindermusik classes (which my mom already has dibs on) and $$ for a membership to this indoor playplace that's geared toward babies & toddlers (it has lots of fun toys, hands-on kitchen, classes, etc). maybe also a membership to the academy of sciences in san francisco (living rainforest, huge aquarium, etc.)

my thinking is that dd has enough toys already, we get books and music from the library, and i personally like to buy her clothes so that i can get good fit (she's already in 9 month stuff!) and buy for quality, not quantity (some in the family are the other way around). but classes and stuff like that are really out of our budget, so we need a little help. and i SO want to get out of the house this winter...

  • DDs 1st birthday is two days after Christmas, so we are pulling double gift duty.  The things we are buying her (for both holidays, I haven't figured out which is for which, yet) are:

    Wooden drum

    Wooden xylophone

    Rocking horse

    Wooden blocks

    Wooden walk behind/doll pram

and I am going to make her a doll

We are asking that family/friends stick with things like puzzles, books, clothing, etc.  I know my dad is contributing to her college fund instead of buying actual presents.

The children's museum here is free or I would totally get a membership there as a pressie!

  • I made a list on oompa but what it really came down to were wooden blocks, puzzle type things, and books. DD just doesn't play with that many toys right now so I'm not sure what she'll be into then.
  • DS is getting this https://stridersports.com/ from us, but that is as far as I have gotten.  DH may make him a toybox and an easel.  I really want to get him some art supplies and more musical instruments.  I think I will head over to Oompa make update my wishlist.  Thanks for the reminder!
