s/o roadtrips

Apparently some of yalls roadtrips growing up were alot more docile and relaxing than ours were. ;-) I remember roadtrips with my sisters, kicking each other, screaming, fighting over what music we wanted to listen to, someone is sitting in my space, who had to sit in the middle and our parents begging us to just.be.quiet.for.one.minute. LOL. Occasionally, we'd sing a song together or play a card game or roadtrip game, but that didn't last too long before the fighting began again! It was generally torture for all involved...very little "bonding" occurred until we actually got to a hotel for the night or our destination ;-) But, it was MUCH cheaper than flying with 5 people so every summer, we roadtripped it all over the country!

About the same. :-) But those are some of the fun memories now, lol. Of course back then we would fold the back seat down, throw a blanket over it and lay down for most of the trip. Now the kiddos would be so confined in their carseats that it would be harder for them to be in eachothers space and kicking eachother.

My Mom would keep my brother and I on either side of the car by having a contest to see who could count the most things on their side. (billboards with people on them, orange warning signs, convertibles, licence plates from certain states, etc.)

LOL that's so true! We had an Astro Van and the backseat turned into a bed!!! We'd fold that down and sit on it and play cards or whatever....can't do those things nowadays. The kids will be all strapped in and stuck the whole time. Ugh....not looking forward to the crankiness that being stuck in one place for 12+ hours will create ;-)

For long trips, my mom had little fun surprises that she gave us at random times throughout the car ride to keep us occupied. The surprise factor was fun, it kept us from fighting because we each either had our own thing or we had something structured to do together, and it made the time pass more quickly.

For example, we might get a MadLibs book first. That's something we could do together. Then we might each get a coloring book & a fresh pack of crayons. Sometimes it was a candy bar. Sometimes a little card game like Old Maid or something similar. One year we each got a Magna Doodle. That must've been a long trip...lol. Usually the surprises were small & inexpensive.

Our longest roadtrip was back and forth to San Antonio. When we went with my parents, it was usually at night time and so we would sleep. most of the time, we went with an aunt or uncle and so we always played roadtrip games or my aunt/uncle would tell scary stories. It was pretty fun!

Only child here, so I was generally bored. Lots of games. I especially remember spotting the "South of the Border" billboards on IH-95.

We only did 2 vacations that I can remember, and only 1 of those included a road trip. (the other was to a rented Galveston beach house.) ETA: The road trip was to see family in Ohio and Illinois - so a L O N G trip.

In our van though us 7 kids had our assigned seats. My Mom had a HUGE tin of cookies in the very back, and I remember being excited about cookie time because I'd get to reach over the back to get the tin and start passing it around. (My seat was the back left corner!) The only activity I distinctly remember was making potholders with those little loom kits. (I was @ 5.)

What I remember most though was the hotel room. At that time 3 of us were bedwetters -- the 3 of us had to sleep together all sideways on a big bed. We all fought in the morning over who peed on whom.

We played the silent game a alot. LOL I never won.

We read a lot, sang, listened to Wee Sing tapes, did the tape on book(with book) combo and played a lot of games.

Once we had a minivan it was pretty peaceful other than the initial fight over who got which row. Then I would just sleep or read the whole way on my own bench seat. When we were smaller and without the mini van the armrest in the back seat was the divider and essentially I would just curl up and sleep.
