Highs 70, Lows 50 - in the mountains

We are going out of town.  To the mountains - the highs are right at 70, lows 50.  I am from TX.  I don't know what mountain 70s and 50s feel like.  I know this seems like really dumb questions.  Oh well.

For DD (22 months):

will she be comfortable in long sleeves all the time?

flannel/fleecy pjs or just regular - what she wears at home?  No we aren't sleeping outside :p and yes there is a working thermostat in the house

does she need gloves?

I know, I should be able to figure this all out on my own.

Re: Highs 70, Lows 50 - in the mountains

  • Do you put her in gloves and flannel jammies in when it's 70 here in TX?  Mountain temps feel like regular temps, only it probably won't be as humid as TX.

I think jeans and a t-shirt or shorts and a t-shirt will be fine.  Bring a light sweater or hoodie for the evenings, if it gets chilly.  Don't bring gloves.

Pack according to what activities y'all be doing as well- proper shoes for hiking, swim suit, sun hats.  It'll probably be cool in the mornings and that 70 will feel pretty warm with the heat index.

  • I would bring layers (for her and you guys).  So a long sleeve shirt for her plus a windbreaker or something and she should be fine (or a fleece jacket or whatever).  I'd probably bring a short sleeve shirt and shorts in case it gets warmer, just in case.  Being in the mountains, the nights can get crisp so be prepared for that if you plan on being out at night.  PJs, take both? And during the day there will probably be a light breeze most of the day. I probably wouldn't bother with gloves but you can always throw them in if it makes you feel better, they don't take up much space.  Don't forget sunscreen.  :)

Sounds wonderful - I love the mountains!  Makes me want to get to Tahoe...

  • Where are you going? I can only tell you about CO mountains in the summer (we're actually going for a week in August, so I've been assessing wardrobes). Here we typically have high 70's, mid 40's in the mountains at this time of year.

Here, it gets very cold at night, so I make sure to have fleece pajamas. It takes much longer to warm up in the morning, too, so even if it's a high of 75 for the day, it might be low sixties until noon. This means jeans and long-sleeves are a must, or at least short sleeves with a jacket or sweatshirt that can be taken off later. A warm jacket for evenings is good, I do mid-weight fleece. Shoes and socks, not just sandals. And definitely rain slickers, our mountains are prone to sudden and very heavy thunderstorms.

  • thanks everyone. Hizzo - we will be near Telluride.

Oh, yeah. You're going to want some warm clothes. Mid-day will be shorts and short sleeves, but mornings and evenings will probably be chilly. Have fun, that's a beautiful part of the state!

  • Well I say yes to the gloves BECAUSE I have seen snow in the summer in the mountains and no not a lot of it but definitely enough that I wanted to play in it even as an adult. I've been in shorts and sandals and snow. Your DD has got to be able to pick up snow!

I totally agree with this.  I am from Wyoming and it is chilly in the evenings and mornings.  Bring clothes that you can layer.  I put my LO is fleece pj's all year round.
