Yesterday I posted about feeling utterly terrible after having a 2 hour glucose test yesterday to check for insulin resistance (to corroborate the PCOS diagnosis). about 15 minutes after I had the 2nd blood draw - 2 hours after drinking the orange drink I got home and felt like crap. I was sweaty, clammy, dizzy, and really shaky and weak.
Well I just got my results and my 7:30 am fasting (8 hours) blood sugar was 79 - totally normal, my 2 hour blood sugar after the drink was 58! Mild to moderate hypoglycemia. No wonder I felt like crap. I'm not sure what this means, I haven't heard from my doctor yet, so I don't know if it is a problem (though I"ve had episodes like this before in the past), but at least the crummy feeling wasn't in my head.
Re: That explains it: crummy feeling after 2 hr glucose
Nope - my understanding of diabetes (which isn't a lot) is that blood sugar is too high, or someone w/ diabetes has taken too much insulin and then their blood sugar drops. Mine dropped on it's own. DOn't know if that means I made too much insulin naturally or what. Hopefully it's not something serious.
that is odd. So sorry you felt lousy. The only thing I can think of is that your sugar level may have shot up high very quickly and then the insulin went into overdrive to push it back down?
I would guess they are going to want to do a more detailed OGTT. I hope it was just a fluke.
Yeah, something funky is going on there and I hope they can figure it out with you.
I did a similar test while in IF testing but never had similar experiences or results. We just did a 12 hour fasting test without the sugar syrup and my number was borderline diabetic which earned me metformin.
When I was pregnant and had to do the gest. diabetes test, I didn't fast as my doc didn't advise or require it, ate a normal breakfast, and then drank the sugar syrup, did the test and felt slightly icky afterwards but not terrible. My number was stellar (90 or so). My OB's partner thought that meant I likely had diabetes but I ignored her.
My doc emailed and said everything was normal. So I emailed back and told her how bad I felt after the test and if I should be worried.
That's no fun. My dad gets hypoglycemic attacks frequently if he doesn't eat often enough. This happened after a stomach surgery he had.
I've had one random hypoglycemic attack years ago and only knew what it was because of seeing my dad go through them.
I really hope it was just a fluke, fingers crossed for you.
I'm diabetic and take insulin, and that is EXACTLY how I feel when my blood sugar gets too low because I didn't eat enough carbs. Eating 15-30grams of carbs when you feel like that will bring it right back up within 15 minutes. Doesn't have to be candy, although sugar works faster than straight carbs, but it's not a big deal as long as you recognize the symptoms and treat.
If your blood sugar gets too low, and 58 is starting to get down there, you can go into a coma, and possibly die, so it's super important to be aware of your body when you start feeling the symptoms. The lowest I've ever been is 45, and I could barely function to drink some orange juice.
Oh that's great news! I get hypoglycemic too and it really sucks. Also people don't "get" it, they just think I am crazy because I always have food with me wherever I go. Power bars or little soy milk juice boxes, or bananas or other snacks. My mom even brings food when she picks me up from the airport in case I ran out and got a migraine.
