Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Moms of big babies..come in....

Does your DC sit up, try to crawl, scoot, get up on hands and knees?

I was reading an article the other day that said bigger babies may be a bit delayed in some milestones because of their size, I guess it makes sense but im just wondering how true it is.

Ds is a big boy, well over 20 pounds now ( has 6 month appt. on friday so well see just how much then)

We practice sitting everyday but he is still having some trouble. He cant get on hands and knees yet, doesnt really scoot, and doesnt crawl. He can roll both ways, did belly to back at 2 months and back to belly at 4 months, but I dont think he has rolled either way since 5 months.  (Of course at 6 months I dont expect him to do all the above, I know its a bit early)

I know every baby is different and they do things on their own time but i'm just curious to see when your DC did these things?

Re: Moms of big babies..come in....

  • I don't know what you consider big, but at DS 6 month appt he was 18lbs 10 oz.  I haven't seen a delay in his milestones.  He sat unassisted aroung 6.5 months, and just start really crawling in the past few days.

  • my girl is 6 months and is about 20 pounds... she has been getting to her milestones early if anything.  She has been sitting unassited for a few weeks now and is getting up on all fours daily...

  • DS started sitting on his own at 6 months and had it perfected within 2 weeks. Scooting came late, he just started at about 9 months. He's still learning how to pull himself up onto things and this just started the other day. He can't go from belly to sitting position. I definitely agree that it's due to size. DS has weighed 22lbs since about 7 months or so. He still weighs 22lbs, but that's because instead of being chunky like before, he has now stretched out and lost a lot of the chunkage, which is why I think he's suddenly learning all his new skills.
  • DS weighed 19 pounds at his six month appt.  I haven't noticed any delays.  He has hit all of his milestones on time and is close to crawling.  All babies develop at different rates, that is what I keep telling myself. :)

  • ds was about 18 pounds at 6 months, he is now 24 pounds, and when he turned 8 months he did everything at once, he crawled, sat and now he is standing up, he hated trying to sit up before, but now he is pro and does it on his own, it took him a while to figure out how to crawl also.. Smile
  • I don't know.. of course every baby is different, but DD has consistently been in the 95th % for height and 80-90th % for weight and she actually seems to be hitting a lot of physical milestones early. She army crawled a little before 5 months, held her head up at a few days old, sat up on her own around 5 months, pulled herself up at 7.5 months, real crawled then too as well as figured out how to go from belly to sitting, and she is now pulling herself up constantly and able to hold herself up w/ one hand while playing w/ and grabbing things with her other hand..

My Godson didn't sit up on his own until 9 months. He is now 15 months and is just starting to cruise. His pedi said this was perfectly normal and fine. So it really all depends on the baby and is nothing to worry about :)

  • I'm not too worried about DS hitting his miletsones, I know he'll do them on his own time.

I was just curious to see how true this article was...Seems like some bigger babies may have some trouble hitting milestones, but I guess it's not true for all.  (who knows if they would of sat, crawled..etc if they were a bit smaller.. ya know?)

     Thanks for all the replies!

  • DD has consistently been in the 95% for weight and height.  She rolled both ways around 3 months and is a pro at rolling, but shows no interest in doing anything else yet- she can't sit up on her own, scoot, or anything like that.  I too have heard that bigger babies are sometimes slower, but obviously all babies are different for a variety of factors...

  • My DD is big - 90% percentile for height and weight and was 19lbs at 6 months. She's either right on time or a little behind with her milestones. I think she a few weeks from crawling still. She has the ambition, but hasn't put it all together yet!
  • DD JUST starting rolling over last week. She sits great, but can't do any of the other things you mentioned.

  • My first DS was huge...born at 9 lb 5 oz and was almost 22 lbs at 6 months.  He was a little slow with milestones up until 9 months and then he hit them all in a row.  He did learn to roll both ways at 6 months, but didn't learn how to sit up by himself, crawl or pull himself up until 9 months all at once.  He started cruising at 11 months and walked at a year.

My second DS isn't as big as DS#1 but still big; born at 8 lb 7 oz and was 21 lb at 6 months.  He has been early with everything...rolled both ways by 4 months, crawled at 6 months and has been cruising since 9 months.  He is 10 months and started letting go of things and standing alone but hasn't taken any steps yet.

So I don't really think it holds true...both DH and I were smaller babies (don't ask me how we had such big kids) and neither of us walked until we were 15 months old.

  • My big boy didn't roll over until he was a week shy of 6 months, so I would say that's on the late end of that milestone.  I definitely think it was due to his size, he had so much weight to pull around!  He was 21lbs at 6 months.  However, that's the only late milestone he had.  He sat unassisted around 6.5 months (although he would still tip backwards occasionally), and crawled at exactly 9 months.  Shortly after crawling he started pulling up everywhere.
  • DS was 22 pounds at 6 months and now over 27 lbs. at 9 months. He was never delayed in milestones and in some cases maybe early. I think he will be walking in the next couple of weeks. I did hear this however. Our pedi said not to be surprised if he was on the late side due to size but he proved her wrong. He is actually standing by himself for a couple seconds now and trying to walk by himself but has not?succeeded. I really think it all comes down to they will hit there milestones when they are ready and not when we want them to.?
  • DD was 21.1 lbs and 28 in at her 6mos appt.  She started crawling one day after her 6mos b-day.  She can sit unassisted and roll both ways.  She now can pull herself up to stand but no cruising yet.
