Can too much iron be bad?

I found out in second tri I was low in iron, so I went on a supp. ?At glucose test found out I was anemic so I"m on two supp's a day. ?300mg each. ?What if your body "catches" up and starts to gain iron at a faster rate. ?Can this be a bad thing?

  • I know that too much iron can make you incredibly constipated.. Will your dr's office do the finger prick iron test? That would be an easy way to monitor it..

  • I wouldn't worry until the pregnancy is over. The conditions that caused the anemia is still around, so chances are good that, even if your levels are normal now, they would drop again if you stop the supplements.

You CAN get too much iron, but it takes a lot more than you're taking and you'll have symptoms like GI upset--ulcers, vomiting, etc--if that is happening. As long as your dr knows how much you're taking each day, they'll make sure you're not getting too much. They'll probably test your blood again at your 6 week post partum check up and take you off the iron if you don't need it.

  • The body can only break down so much iron.  If it was having difficulty, you would probably notice a change in your stool and nausea would set in.  But anemia can take awhile to resolve and I doubt that it would resolve itself before the end of your pregnancy.  I am sure your doctor will continue to monitor your levels.

  • If you are really concerned then have them check it. I think it takes a few months to really build back up. So I imagine being pregnant it takes even longer.

Are you extremely constipated? I was on 1 supplement/day & had horrible constipation. At 28 weeks, my level was good so she told me to cut it back to a few times a week.

  • most women never have a problem with to much iron till after menopause there is a condition called hemocromatosis but women hardly ever get it and if they do its after menopause, so you have nothing to worry about.
