Just trying to figure out what baby gear we actually need to get. We saw a microwave sterilizer at BRU so we registered for it thinking that we "need" it. Then I got to thinking that the dishwasher has a sterilize setting, so I figure I could probably use that. Is that true? Also, what exactly needs to be sterilized? Bottles, paci's, toys???? So, I guess my question is, what do you sterlize, and how do you do it??
Thanks ![]()
Re: Sterilizing stuff for baby
I have been using the Microsteam bags from Medela. They work great. We sterilize things like pump parts, BF supplies (nipples, shields, etc) in them.
Bottles, pacis, sippies, etc., I just stick in the dishwasher. We make sure to run a load every night. Instead of the microwave steamer, maybe just register for at least a couple of those $3 dishwasher parts baskets. I like to have at least two, so you can keep one in the sink for dirty parts as they accumulate through the day, and just pop it in the DW in the evenings.
I don't think a separate sterilizer is necessary. I boiled nipples and pacifiers.
Occasionally I sterilized my pump parts in one of those Medela steam bags, but mostly I just washed items in hot, soapy water. Our dishwasher also has a sanitize setting, so occasionally I would do that if I was too lazy to wash bottles by hand.
Ditto the above.
For the first use, I boiled all bottles and their parts, pacifiers, and pump parts. Since then I use the dishwasher. I do have the medela steam bags but it's easier to throw pump parts in the dishwasher...especially since my medela softfit shields can't be put in the steam bags.
If the toy can be boiled, I do that. Most have parts that can't be submerged though (like electric, battery operated, or toys with squeakers) so I wipe or spray those with clorox and then use a warm soapy (dawn) cloth to go over that.
