I never found any side effects for my babies or the women's babies that I worked with, although *some* babies have a hard time with the anise that is in it. Fennel is supposed to calm the tummy and anise is supposed to get rid of gas - and both are considered galactogogues - milk producers.
I agree though, I usually added a bit of raw sugar or honey, unless you like high black licorice flavor.
I've been drinking 3 cups of this almost every day since April. Since I pump 3 times at work, I pretty well make it my routine to drink 1 cup during each pumping. I forget on the weekends (plus it is so hot out now) and I do notice a difference if I don't drink it for several days. I found the best price at Kroger and now I enjoy drinking it.

I add 1 Splenda.
I hate the taste of that tea.
I was taking Fenugreek (3 capsules) and Blessed Thistle (3) capsules twice a day.
I'm now taking More Milk plus capsules on the recommendation of my lactation consultant.
