The Best Names EVER, underlined twice and with not just one, but two exclamation points is the title of this particular page in a diary I kept in sixth grade (and beyond). After discussing our teen dream-names yesterday, I promised I'd make my husband drag the box with this diary in it out of the attic so I could post.
My youngest sister was born when I was ten; that was about the time I started really getting into names. By the time I was fourteen, I had a long list and was a pro at inventing new variations and spiffy (that was the word of the year at my school in the 8th grade) ways to spell them. So, without further ado:
Girls--
Katya (this is cat-yah, you'll see later I went through a 'Russian' phase)
Kassydie
Saydie
Kassandra
Kourtnie (yep, with a K . . . 'cause it's more klassy)
Alexia
Genevieve
Aralena (I think this was air-uh-lee-nuh)
Ginny
Jenae (jenn-ay)
Ashlynn
Karissa
Jyllien or Jillyen
Boys--
Ryker
Remington
Emmett
Ethan
Airik (why couldn't I just spell it Eric?)
Cole, Colton
Samule (I can remember having a great reason for this spelling!)
Zeke
Twin Names--
Alexei and Anya (adopted from Russia, maybe?)
Lyric and Song (to be followed, I'm sure, by children Stanza and Rhythm)
Paliana and Leilani (the Hawaiian adoptees)
Samantha and Tabitha (um, I'm not sure if I was a Bewitched fan or not)
Kaye and Elle
Elizabeth and Annalee
Haven and Hayden (oh, how that hurts me now!)
Aralena and Aurora
**Apparently, were my twins born boys, I was going to cull them at birth; or abandon them; or just give them girls' names: )
I've saved the best for last, though. In my "Kass" phase I apparently came up with this gem: Kassyndrae (that would be cuh-sin-dray)
Re: The Best Names EVER
Those are AWESOME!!
I went through a gothic stage in late middle school/early HS...here were my top picks for names (ironically only ever considered girl names...and now I'll have two boys!):
Mi'Lane
Briar
Aroura
Trixie
Harmon
Elspeth
and...
best for last...
Siouxzy (Susie...but like the Native American tribe...which I have no relationship to).
Awesome list. I could see people getting ideas from some of your you-neek names there. Kassyndrae and Airik are gonna be the hot names of 2011 now, hehe.
When I was a teenager, I hated the all the chat speak abbreviations, so I decided, to mock that way of typing, I was going to adopt children from all different countries and name them Lol, Lmao (luh-mayo), and Rofl (roffle).
Um.......
I think I'm speechless.
Kassyndrae????? You truly have a talent Strangebird! That's freakin' awesome. I know I've got baby name lists somewhere, probably buried in a box in our storage unit. I've got nothing on these gems though!!! I definitely remember going through a Russian name phase too, and I think a French one (Colette and the like). Fun times!
Wow! How, ummm...creative?
Some of the spelllings made me squint, like I was staring into the sun. Ouch!
lol, great list.
Congrats BTW on your ticker!
*faints*
Whoa, wait...you and I both had Lyric on our lists? I knew you were awesome. Love the double underline.
Bows to the superior strangebird.

Kassyndrae is a peach, isn't it? And I had completely forgotten about it, but when I saw it in my journal today, I laughed out loud, suddenly remember how much I loved that name. I told it to everyone, insisting I was naming my daughter that. I have never been so glad that I knew how to use birth control as a teen--imagine my poor child, cursed with that name!
I went through a French phase, too, but I think by then I had developed my pet peeve of spelling/language integrity. And I still love foreign names today, but I put most of them on a reserve list for names I'm not brave enough to give my white, middle class American babies.
In this case, I'm not at all certain it's a good thing to "win." Reviewing this list has certainly put all the spelling conundrums and invented names we see today into perspective. Now I understand that we all (or at least most of us) liked those random Ys and alternate spellings when we were kids--some of us grew up, others apparently didn't.
And, yeah, I giggled when I saw your list. Imagine two of us out there hoping to naming our children Lyric--the fact that I had such a nifty twin set planned really hurts me, though.
OMG Thank you for sharing. Crying laughing here. I had a similar list with similar insanity on it. I hope to God it's still under my teenage bed at my parents' house. I need to dig that bi-otch out.
My niece's name is actually Lyric Marie, it totally suits her though and shes got a LOT of character...they named her after their love of music.
I giggled reading all of these.
