Gracen- for a girl?

We love Grace but it sounds a little odd with our last name.  Gracie sounds better and we would call her that but DH won't name her what he calls "a nickname."  I've researched all variations of Grace and this is the only one I like.

Potential middle name?  Too boyish?  Good compromise so I can have my little Gracie? TIA!

Re: Gracen- for a girl?

  • I've seen Grayson for a boy, but think Gracen is cute for a girl!  I say go for it

  • Unfortunately, I think you're about to get bashed. This name has been brought up here several times now, it's almost universally disliked.

I don't hate it, but I definitely don't love it. Perhaps you could name her FIRSTNAME GRACE LASTNAME and still call her Gracie? I normally wouldn't suggest that, but it's far better than using Gracen.

Edited to fix my stupid typo.

  • Grayson, yes; Gracen, no. I would do something super feminine for the MN - Elizabeth, Ava, Emily, etc.

  • eek!  I haven't been on lately to see this name get bashed.  I guess I'll brace myself.

Just wish DH (and I ) had a better last name:)

  • I'm not a fan of the name Gracen for a girl or a boy. I would go with pp suggestion is using Grace as a mn and calling her Gracie. That is a much better option than Gracen IMO.
  • I really like Gracen for a girl! It was one of the names on my list and I actually like it better than Gracie. I have found that people on the name board tend to like more traditional names and almost everything else gets bashed on here. If you like it, go for it!

  • There is a little girl at DD's daycare with this name.  At first I hated it but it is growing on me.  If you like it I say go for it.

  • i never really had a big opinion until a couple weeks ago.  I was at the park and heard a mom yell out to her DD - and called her Gracen.  I didn't like it.  At all.

To me it's very much a boys name, and spelling it in a feminine manner doesn't matter when you're speaking it.

  • imagemj.reilly:

Gracen is not awful by any means. At least you spelled it "correctly." Now if you spelled it Graycyn....then you would get "bashed."

I proactively looked for the most traditional spelling as I am not a fan of unique spellings either.

But now that you mention "Graycyn"....  :)

  • I have to be honest... I really dislike it. It isn't the worst name ever or anything, its just my personal taste. If you honestly love it then go for it. However, my best advice would be to use Grace as a middle name and call her Gracie... take Anna Grace, for example. She could go by Anna Grace or Gracie or Anna or Annie Grace... maybe pick a name like that?
  • I'm sorry I really don't like it

  • It's a redneck name to me.  Sorry.
  • Regardless of the fact that the spelling is different, no one is going to know that this isn't the male name Grayson. They sound exactly the same. That said, I hate it for a girl. The name is all boy to me.

I love Grace, and honestly, I would just use Grace. I don't think your last name can sound that bad with it, right? I do love the nn Gracie too ... adorable! :)

  • No.  Go with Grace or don't go there at all.  Maybe have Grace as a middle name? Would using a name that means grace work?

  • I know a (girl) Gracyn IRL.  I really dislike this name for a girl.  Grayson/Greyson for a boy is ok, but nms at all for a girl.

  • NMS at all. I don't really like Grayson for a boy either FWIW. What not just Grace?

  • My friend's daughter is Gracyn. I love it!
  • Okay, so some thoughts...Greyson and Grayson are boys names, so thank you for not spelling it that way. You don't have any unnecessary Ys or Ls or Ns and it's easy to say. So on a sliding scale, I don't detest it. Grace is preferred, but with its oversaturation I can see the appeal of Gracen. With all the Graylins, Graelins, GraceLynns, Graysins, Graycen I see on here, Gracen is your best bet if you're super stuck on it. It's what we'd usually try to talk to someone into if they suggest one of those wrecks above. Case in point...

So no, it's not Nevaeh or anything, but to be clear, it's a made up name that's a variation of the popular Grace.
