Newbie with boy name trouble - Brooklyn for a boy?

My husband and I found out a few weeks ago that we are expecting a boy and ever since then we have been having trouble finding a boys name that we like. For girls names we were both on the same page, we both like very feminine girl names such as Tatiana and Delilah. However for boy names we are all over place with names ranging everywhere from traditional, trendy, to unique.

Recently a friend suggested Brooklyn for a boys name and my DH really likes it but I'm not so sure about it. I sort of like it and I personally don't see it as feminine or girly but right now it is mostly being used as a girls name.

I'm concerned that if we use this for our son that he is always going to be mistaken for a girl or he will always get the Brooklyn Beckham association. And also I'm worried that if we use this name for our son than it'll clash with any names we pick out in the future for other children.

Some of the other boys names on my list are: Theo, Samuel, Kincade, Graham, Brayden, and Carson. DH's list is: Camden, Brent, Liam, Hunter, and Austin.

 Please help us, thanks!

Re: Newbie with boy name trouble - Brooklyn for a boy?

  • Brooklyn for a boy....um, no.

Out of your other boys names I like Theo, Samuel, Graham, Carson, Liam, and Hunter.

Those are all solid, classic boy names that you really can't go wrong with.

    Good luck!

  • I think Brooklyn is horrible for a boy.

I don't mind Liam or Austin and even Hunter and Carson aren't that bad.

  • Sorry, I think Brooklyn for a boy is terrible.

From your list I love Samuel, Graham, and Liam.

  • Brooklyn is a place name that has been claimed by girls for obvious reasons - LYN ending. I would avoid that for a boy like the plague. Could you offer Brooks as an alternative?

Oh and just in case he brings it up, changing the spelling of Brooklyn wouldn't make it more masculine; it's the same girl name.

  • I automatically think girl for Brooklyn.  Brooke is girl.  Lynn is girl.  Just sounds feminine.  I was also thinking Brooklyn Beckham when I thought of it possibly working for a boy.

Off your list, I really like Graham, Camden (and I'm really not a fan of all the millions of -den names out there), and Liam.

  • PLEASE DON'T!

Brooklyn is an awful name to begin with, but to give it to a boy is just a tragedy. It's gaining popularity rapidly, for girls, your little boy would no doubt meet several little girls with his name; it would be awful.

  • def not for a boy... I agree with PP

    BROOKS

    (Love it)

Considering the meaning of the name Brooklyn, and the history of how we came to use the word (we totally botched the Dutch words Brooken Line, meaning "irregular shoreline" for the area south of Queens once known as Kings), I would never use it as a name for a child. Just a little background on the name Brooklyn.

Awesome! I didn't know that. Thank you, Feffy for some more random knowledge to store away: )

  • I don't like it for anyone, but it is a girl name.

  • I think Brooklyn for a boy is horrible.

My favorite names from your lists are Carson and Austin, but honestly, almost anything is better than Brooklyn.

  • Thanks for all the advice, it's safe to say that DH and I will not be using Brooklyn for our son's name. We are returning back to our list and thinking about going with either Carson or Austin for first name. Any middle name combos? Thanks again for all the help!
  • Please dont name your little boy Brooklyn...thats such a girly name that isnt that great to begin with...I just see disaster in a boys future with that one....

Samuel! thats a fabulous name :-)

This actually not accurate.  From wikipedia:

"The Village of Breuckelen, named for Breukelen in the province of Utrecht in the Netherlands, was authorized by the Dutch West India Company in 1646; it became the first true municipality in what is now New York State. At the time, Breuckelen was part of New Netherland."

    and

"Over time, the name evolved from Breuckelen, to Brockland, to Brocklin, to Brookline, to Brookland and eventually, to Brooklyn."

All that said, I hate it for a boy or a girl.

  • It rubs me as a girls name...what about Brooks...similar but a guys name (i.e. Brooks Calbert Robinson, Jr.  the baseball hall of famer!)
  • All I have to say is do NOT name your boy Brooklyn.

  • I am glad you are eliminating Brooklyn for your boy. Its not particularly feminine, but it is definitely more of a girls name.

Out of your list, I like Theo, Samuel, Graham, and Austin.

I also think Brooks is a decent alternative. What about Brock, Corbin, Rowan, Wesley, Elliot?

  • Definitely a NO for Brooklynn for a boy, sorry!

I really like Theo, Kincade, Graham, & Liam from your list!
