Success after IF

I think we made a mistake in having Danny use the walker :(

Why, oh why didn't we listen when people told us that walkers could delay crawling/walking? Because we're stubborn and we loved seeing his face light up as he glided up and down the halls.

Now he's over 9 months old and has been army crawling for the past 3 weeks. My husband and I are 95% positive that he would've been crawling on all fours if we had never put him in the walker.

Because we don't want to delay walking, we packed up the walker. Out of sight, out of mind, right?

Mom's, if your baby used a walker when did he/she start crawling and walking?

Re: I think we made a mistake in having Danny use the walker :(

  • Miles used a walker at the sitter's house.  I wasn't crazy about it, but I chose my battles.  He rolled around more than crawl and he never really crawled on all fours...army crawling was the most crawling he did.  Then around 11 months he was taking his first steps.

So don't write him off yet.  I think they all walk when they're ready and some are just ready later and some of those kids happened to use walkers.  Try not to worry...he'll walk when he's ready and then he'll be unstoppable!  :)

  • Don't be too hard on yourself, everyone used walkers when we were little and I am sure most of us can walk by nowWink

I'm sure by taking it away it will force him to move on his own, I can't imagine after so much mobility he'll be happy being stationary. Where there's a will there's a way!

  • DS used a walker and LOVED it and I don't regret letting him use it.  he army crawled like your DS seems to be doing for a while, then moved onto regular crawling and didn't walk (unassisted) until 15 months.  So even if it did delay DS, he enjoyed the mobility of the walker and I was happy to make him happy.

Henry has never crawled on all fours. He started army crawling at about 9.5 months and that's still how he gets around. I doubt he'll ever crawl on all fours--don't worry about it, some babies never do and it's perfectly fine. Henry is already pulling up and cruising, so I know he's not behind developmentally.
  • Mine used a walker, and was full on walking independently before 9 months.  I don't think the walker made a difference either way.

  • L didn't use a walker but did army crawl.  And she got fast too.  She only crawled on all fours for about a week before she began walking around 10 months.
  • i don't know how you can be so sure your child WOULD HAVE done anything if you did XYZ differently.

many babies don't crawl at all- and since yours is army crawling- why are you so upset? some babies just do that.

my boys didn't crawl until 9mo... Gibby not until 10mo.  I was never concerned.

  • Nico did not start crawling at all until he was just days away from being 10 months old.  Since he did not seem too interested in crawling we bought a walker and he loved it!  I think it help him understand the concept of walking.   Kids start crawling at all different times and some don't even crawl at all.  I wouldn't worry about, as long as he is walking before 15 months.

Ditto to this, except DD was 8.5 months when she started crawling (army style). And she's never been in a walker.

  • We did NOT use a walker and Garrison did not crawl until 10.5 months.  So, don't beat yourself up over the walker.  You'll never know if it was the cause but there are plenty of kids that don't use them who do not crawl by 9 months.

G will be 13 months tomorrow and she is walking (well, taking some independent steps anyway) so I don't think her delayed crawling delayed her walking....he'll get there!

  • We didn't use a walker and dd didn't really crawl until almost 10 months.  She didn't start walking until 15 months.  Both were in the range of 'normal' so I wasn't concerned at all.

  • Both of my girls used a walker (LOVED it) and Karly never really crawled, she did the army crawl and then was walking at 12 months.  Katie started crawling around 10 months and really started walking around 15 months.  I think each child is different.
