Are OTC prenatal vitamins as good as the prescription vitamins? I am concerned that I may be getting too much of certain vitamins since they usually list everything as being 100% of your RDA. I see One A Day just put out a prenatal vitamin. Does anyone know if this is any good?
Re: Prenatal Vitamins...OTC or Prescription
Ask your doctor.
I never got Rx prenatals.
Some vitamins (such as VitC) are fine to have more than 100% of, as they're water soluble and you just pee out the excess.
You have been most helpful. Thank you so much. BTW Lily is absolutely beautiful! I am hoping for a girl when the time comes. I want to name her Violet.
I couldn't take prenatal's because they made me sick, but my doc said Flinestones 2x a day were the same. I just made sure I had 800 mcg folic acid and DHA supplements.
I went to the pharmacy yesterday and bought Nature's Bounty Your Life Multi Prenatal with DHA. I spent about half an hour reading all the labels of all the different brands. For the most part, they were all the same with the exception of one that just seemed to have way too much of everything, including Vitamin A which I found very odd. Anyhoo, I wound up getting the Nature's Bounty because it was the only one that didn't have preservatives or a laundry list of ingredients I could never pronounce. It doesn't have any artificial flavors or sweeteners, no sugar, no starch, no milk, no lactose, no cluten, no wheat, no yeast, no shellfish and is sodium free so it seemed like the best choice. I took it after lunch yesterday and so far I haven't felt sick.
I take OTC prenatal and haven't had any problems aside from trying to get the dang pill down. :-)
I chose Nature Made Prenatal Multivitamin with DHA (https://www.naturemade.com/ProductDatabase/prd_prod.asp?productid=266) and it's got a nice gel coating so I don't have to taste that powdery stuff. I take mine right before bed and make sure that I have had a little something in my tummy prior (like wheat toast and a little Nutella)... No nausea as a result so two thumbs up for me.
Good luck choosing!
