BF & STTN

If your baby is sleeping through the night and you are still BFing/pumping, do you get up in the middle of the night to pump, or just pump it all in the morning?

knock on wood, DS has been sleeping through the night the last 4-5 nights, and amazingly enough so am I, so just wondering if I should set an alarm clock to wake up and pump. I'm waking up full, but not engorged.

Re: BF & STTN

  • If he's sleeping, then you should sleep too! Enjoy it!

The only reason I would wake up to pump is if you are not making enough milk to keep up with his needs, and an extra pumping session would make the difference.

This was my problem, so I woke up every night at 2 to pump. It was my most productive session and if I didn't do it, I didn't have enough for the next day. If you're meeting his needs without the middle of the night pump, sleep it up :) Let's just say I was THRILLED when he turned 1 and started introducing WCM. That 2am pump was the first one I dropped.

  • When they started to STTN I woke up to pump to build my supply in the freezer.  Looking back, I wish I had done more of this to have more backup in the freezer!
  • Thanks ladies! I might have to get up in the middle of the night to pump, because my supply dipped suddenly last night.
  • I never got up and pumped.  Ever.
