I've noticed that carters clothes don't seem to wash as well as the other brands that LO has. After just the first wash, the clothing looks like it's already been worn a lot. I've even tried washing on delicate and tumble drying on low, but it still doesn't help. They also strink a ton (which isn't a huge problem if I remember to keep that in mind). Their clothes in general seem to fit her well
Also, the top button (metal) of the sleepers start to get a dirty appearance around it after LO has worn it at least a few times. She spits up a ton, and I think this is actually rusting of the metal snap. The outfits are stained, as it doesn't come out with washing. She mostly wears carters sleepers so I have no idea if other brands do this.
Anyone else have this problem? We mostly have gap/gymboree clothing (except for sleepers) in the bigger sizes. She needs more fall/winter weather stuff though. I love some of the new carters outfits they have out but I'm reluctant to buy with the way it looks after I first wash them.
Re: Carters clothing ?
TTC #2 since 9/09 --- mild PCOS; Endometriosis
IUI x4 = BFN
IVF = sometime in 2012
We love carters. Probably 80% of her clothing is from Carters. She never spit up so I don't have any advice on the rusting metal. I will say that now that she's in the toddler sleeps that the non 100% cotton ones don't wash as well and get pilly after a couple washes, and that bugs me so I stick to the 100% cotton
I do notice that the clothes do shrink quite a bit because they are mostly 100% cotton. I usually just end up moving her up a size in the carters before some of her other clothes and that works for us.
I'm not a huge fan of Carter's beyond their white onesies (I'm totally obsessed w/ those), but we did have quite a bit of it for Jackson in the smaller sizes (less than 12m) because he was growing fast at that time and the clothes didn't have time to wear out, really. I don't buy it at all anymore for him, though, because he's pretty hard on his clothes and it's not worth the fading/shrinking. He also stays in the same size for a long time, so I'd rather pay more for clothes that will actually hold up through washing for a long time period and potentially be resold - for example, he has stuff from last fall that is brand new like condition from some pricier stores (J&J, Boden, etc.).
I find that stainfighting is a lot easier on more expensive clothes, as well, so that's another reason I skip Carter's for him. When he was a baby it was easy to get out formula stains and the like, but now that he eats anything and everything, and paints, and colors, it's a lot easier to get those stains out of the pricier brands in my experience.
And I've also found that even if I do pick some things up there cheap, I end up not putting Jackson in them because I've got cuter stuff from other stores so it's a waste of money. Same for Gymbo, Old Navy, etc. - I end up putting him in stuff I like better even if I pick up deals at the cheaper stores. So, for us, not really worth it at this stage.
I'll buy stuff there for Scarlett, though, until she's staying in a size more constantly. It's harder, IMO, to find soft, comfy clothing for infants at other stores. I don't really want to put a newborn in a full outfit from J&J, you know?
I've used Tide and All free and clear.
Carter's is my go to inexpensive brand. If you think Carter's doesn't hold up very well I would stay away from Jumping Beans at Kohl's. I washed some new things once, mixed Carters and JB, and the JB stuff came out looking 10 times more worn than Carters.
