Clicky Poll: Bouncy Seat vs. Swing

In an effort to limit the amount of Baby Gear in the house, I'm very tempted to just register/buy one or the other.

I've heard, though, that it's kinda a crap shoot what the kid will like, hence the reason so many people tend to register for or buy both.

And, because I'm bored, I thought I'd take an informal poll to see what others are doing.

Re: Clicky Poll: Bouncy Seat vs. Swing

  • I'm having a space issue, and am only going to get the swing.

  • I'm right with you on space limitations.  We don't want our house overrun with baby things she may not even use. I'm getting a bouncy seat that converts into a toddler chair. Even if she doesn't like the bouncy seat hopefully she'll enjoy having her own little chair in a few years. And if we need a swing to keep her happy hopefully I can borrow one from my sister or find one at a second-hand store.

  • I'm hoping to be able to borrow a swing and bouncer seat from a friend because I know some babies really prefer one or the other (or hate both!)  Hopefully I can find someone who will let me borrow them.

  • With DD I got both, but she hated the boucy seat. I would only get away with using it while I had her in the bathroom with me so I could take a shower and she was not happy the entire time! The swing was a lifesaver, but only if she was swinging side-to-side. We had a Bobby travel swing to use on trips, but it swung back and forth and she didn't care for that motion.
  • We had both for the trio, and the swing didn't get used much at all...they LOVED their bouncy seats though.

  • I actually registered for the Mamaroo which is a swing and bouncer in one and very compact. It's a little more expensive then most, but it does both plus 5 other motions. It also plugs in to the wall so no batteries, there is an i-pod adapter to play your own music as well as sounds that come with it. It got great reviews, so hopefully it will be worth it.
  • The good thing about those is that there are tons on craigslist or at consignment stores for pretty cheap.  If your LO doesn't like the one you register for, you can get another without spending a ton.

I registered for this as well and I'm hoping baby loves his $200 swing/bouncer combo :)  I like that it has a smaller footprint and I'm hoping it will replace the need for having both a swing and bouncer.

  • I think a bouncy seat would be used alot longer.

And I'm pretty sure they make travel swings that are alot smaller.. if its just a space issue.

  • I'm only registering for a bouncy seat. I also want to limit the amount of baby gear in the house and swings just take up so much room.  I'm hoping LO is happy with the bouncy seat.  If not, I guess I'll have to end up getting a swing.

  • For me they were both important.  I used the bouncy seat alot when I took a shower cause it fit perfectly on the floor in the bathroom and also when we ate dinner cause I could put it on the table next to us.  My DD loved her swing and really helped when I needed to get things done cause she would just hang out in it or take a nap

  • We purchased the BabyBjorn Babysitter Balance. We will not be purchasing a swing.

  • We were going to get a swing until we went to the store and actually saw them. The ones that swing side to side have such a big footprint and we just don't have the space for it. Instead we decided just to go with the bouncy seat. It's light enough to bring from room to room - baby can be in the kitchen while I cook or in the bathroom while I shower. Plus they fold up small enough to take to grandma's house too
  • We got both and good thing, DS didn't like the swing at all.

  • i liked the bouncy seat because its more portable so it can be in whatever room your in and he/she is entertained.

  • We had both with DS and can't imagine not using them.  Without the swing, there may have been days he never napped.  The bouncy seat was great for its portability and he also napped in it sometimes.  We also used it when we started solids since he wasn't quite ready to sit up in a high chair. HTH!
  • I don't know which one yet, but I know I only want one. I'm bound and determined not to fill up the house with a ton of shiny plastic baby junk.

  • Both. Swing was more relaxing and DS took naps in it. We had the rainforest bouncer that he 'played' in (grabbed the little things hanging down, kicked the music button)

  • I got a swing from my BIL/SIL for DD & she hated it. I also got a bouncy seat from them & I think she lived in it until she was almost bending it because she was too big. I got a mini travel swing as a shower present & she loved that. I put her in it so in the bathroom so I could take a shower. She fell asleep in it almost every time. Why it was so different from the regular swing...no idea. I am hoping this one likes the swing so I can have the big one down stairs and the little one upstairs.

Wow sorry about rambling so much, my point was maybe a travel swing would work. When folded up they don't take much room at all. You just never know what your kid will or will not like until you try it.

  • We are registered for both, space isn't a huge issue for us, and I think the bouncer will come in handy when we go to family members houses.
