Paranoid Mom- need to relax and just enjoy this time!

How do all of you moms out there keep from letting SIDS paranoia overcome you? I'm so paranoid, especially because my DD inherited my heart condition which is linked to SIDS (Long QT).  I'm so paranoid that I sometimes wake her up just to make sure she doesn't sleep too deeply! How do I teach myself to relax and not worry so much?

  • Do you have an angel care monitor? That might help set your mind at ease.

  • Unfortunately I am the same way : (  I will touch her to check her breathing sometimes and I will scare her and wake her up.  I think I'm just getting better with time, but I am very paranoid about this as well!
  • You should talk to the dr. about anxiety meds. We also use a angel care monitor with the alarm if they stop breathing. I feel the same way as you and this is my second. I was medicated for it the first time and it is headed that way with this one.
  • I'm a total freak about SIDS! I wake up constantly and check him. And if I cant actually see or hear him breathing, I give him a little poke. I think eventually you just begin to relax a little more and a little more... You'll get there! :)

  • I'm right there with you all.  I had anxiety issues last year before I got pg.  I did pretty well overcoming them in a few months, but now having LO has brought up a lot of the same feelings, just now for him.  I'm extremely worried about SIDS all the time.  I check his breathing often, especially at night, and I've ran inside in a panic when I've had him in the car/stroller to get him back into the cool air and make sure he's ok b/c he breathes so softly when he falls asleep in his carseat.  We got the angel monitor, and will be installing it for his crib as soon as we have our ceiling fan installed tomorrow.  (We have him sleeping in the bassinet in our room now, but he's beginning to outgrow it).  Here's hoping we all can get through this time, enjoy it and breathe easier soon!!!
  • I use the angelcare montior.  It is the only way I sleep.  If you use a fan in the room with the montior, do not put it on full speed because it will move the sensors.

  • For me it just took time.  As I would lay sleeping I would force myself to stay in bed and not check on her constantly and remind myself that chances are she is just fine.  Eventually my mind and body learned to just sleep and not stay up the whole time worrying.
  • Hey! My ds may have lqts too! They diagnosed him w/ it in utero but when he was born the holter monitor only showed him having it 1 percent of the time. We're looking into doing genetic testing now. I use the summer infant day and night monitor and it really helps!
  • SIDS is my biggest fear, too, even my 2nd time around. I'm anxious in general, too.

Here's how I relax: the Babysense movement monitor if in the crib or pack and play, the Snuza clip on monitor if he's sleeping in the swing or Rock n Play, and...well...Lexapro for anxiety. ;)

  • My friend gave me some very good advice:  "If God wants to take my child, he will and there is nothing I can do about it. I just have to trust God and put it in his hands. All I can do is be the best Mom I can be, do the right things (no bumpers in the crib, sleep on the back, etc) and trust in Him". This is what I would say to myself to release my SIDS anxiety to try and sleep.
  • My daughter is 9.5 months old and I still have that paranoia.
  • I am super worried about this as well...my pedi said its so so rare.......he also said 95% of cases happen within 4 months, so know that the scary part is almost over and I bought the snuzo clip on breathing monitor, its AWESOME, it slips on to his diaper or pants and a green light flashes every time he breathes, you can even set it to tick every time he breathes...and if no movement or breathing for 15 seconds an alarm goes off, makes me feel so much better

  • We have the Angelcare Deluxe but since the baby is still in our room, we don't use it yet. I love the idea of that Snuza monitor- I think I may get one of those too!

It's nice to know I am not the only one that feels this way. I know they say it only effects 2500 infants a year in the US which is significantly lower than the number of infants born but that is still 2500 families that are hit with this tragedy.

If you need any info about lqts or the genetic testing, I'd be happy to help. It runs strong in my family and we lost a few family members very suddenly and at young ages due to it. I have a defibrillator and pacemaker which has helped me. LO is on a beta blocker which I hate!!!!
