2nd Trimester

Let's talk bottles.

I was going to re-use DD's bottles, but figured they're almost three years old so it might be better to get a fresh set...we're going with Born-Free.

What bottles are you using and why?  Glass/plastic/drop-ins?

  • There are 4 included with my pump (Medela) but we are also using Avent. My OB recommended Avent though she also likes Dr. Browns.

    We are using Tommee Tippee.

I wanted something that didn't have 45879435 pieces (like Dr. Brown's) and I liked the TT design and they got excellent reviews.

I was torn between Born Free and TT and really had no basis to why I went with TT other than I just (for whatever reason) seemed to like them better.

I'm hoping Kate takes to them since she won't be given the breast at all and will only know that type of bottle.

  • I'm using Dr. Browns glass bottles if I do get around to using bottles.

I think we'll go w/Dr. Browns BPA free bottles.

We'll also use whichever come with the pump set.

Mommy will use this bottle, though

    Mrs. Bo FTW!  Love you.

  • I'm using Dr. Brown's again this time.  I went through every type of bottle before we figured out they worked best with DD.  I'm replacing the nipples and that's it.

  • I'm going to start with the drop-ins because I have them.  If the baby is fine with those, great.  If not, I may try those new tomee tippee.  They look pretty neat.

I don't know if you know this, but some bottles screw onto the bottom of the pump, making it an easier transition to the fridge.  I found that out 2 months into pumping....would have saved me a lot of time. :)

  • I think we're going with Dr. B.  No particular good reason why.

I saw Tommee Tippee and wondered about them...haven't read any reviews, so we went with Born-Free.  Let me know how Kate takes to them...

They're GREAT bottles.  We had them the first time around, but there are so many parts and things get lost, so we went the Born-Free route.  But, I bet your LO will really like them.  DD had acid reflux and they helped a ton.  IF this LO doesn;t take to BF, we're going back to Dr. B.

Is it bad that I haven't really thought about this yet? lol

I was a little overwhelmed when browsing around BRU not that long ago and haven't thought about it since!

Nope. We JUST bought baby stuff (including bottles) last weekend and I'm almost 29 weeks.  How's that for procrastination?

  • We are trying the Playtex Drop-Ins.

Same here... can someone answer this question??

Are the drop ins a hassle to use, I don't know many people that have used them so I'm curious.

  • I'm going to try Breastflow and Dr Browns.

I'm hoping to be able to start pumping not long after having the baby because I want Mr Techie to get in on the feeding action ASAP. The Breastflow nipples are supposed to be closest to what I'm working with so that seemed like a good place to start.

    This.

I'm planning to EBF and my books (and pedi) suggest not giving a bottle for at least four weeks.  I'm not getting anything yet and when I do, I'll get one of each to see how he likes them.  I'll probably start with the Medela since that's what my pump is.

Someone previously mentioned in a similar thread that you should try switching the nipple out before you spend the money and change actual bottles.  Finding the right nipple/bottle can be a challenge...I thought it was a pretty good idea.

  • I was thinking about going with the first years breast flow. Dr. brown's are incredibly difficult to keep clean with all the little parts and avent leak alot...
  • I'm going to BF and pump. We're going with Dr. Browns glass. I am mainly going with Dr. B because BRU didn't have much of a selection for glass bottles and I didn't want the Madela ones. Plus, I have heard great things about the Dr. B bottles and they hook up to the pump I'm getting. I don't really care about how many parts etc.

  • We're going to start with Born Free and Playtex Drop-Ins, I'm lazy so we're hoping he takes to the Drop In's.  We'll use Dr Brown's as a last result, all those little pieces look like a pain, but if he needs them we'll use them.

  • I wil likely use Avent or Dr Brown, but I think I will just buy a few at first to see which one she likes and or needs, I read Dr Brown is best if your baby has colic.

  • We'll use whatever the baby likes.  I learned that lesson the hard way with DS1 - we had stocked up on Avents and he HATED them, so we went through about ten other kinds before finding ones he would take.

  • I use Dr Browns, and LOVE them.  If you go that route, be sure to get the dishwasher kit.  It's only a few bucks, but works great!

I love that there is no way for them to suck in air and get a tummy ache, and the plastic doesn't leach chemicals into the milk.

  • Probably Dr. Browns again. I was able to trade in DD's old bottles because of the BPA deal, so we don't have any bottles left.

  • We used Avent with DS and plan on just buying new nipples and using them again.
  • We are using the same Born Free bottles we used with DS. I will buy some new nipples. We have over 20 bottles, so no way was I going to get new ones for this LO.

  • We decided to go with the Playtex Drop-ins.  This is our first so I have no experience, but they seem convenient and my good friend has 3 kids and recommended them.  She said it was great because you could pump into the drop-ins and store the breast milk and then just transfer them to the bottle when needed and there is less to wash since you throw the liner away.  If baby doesn't like them, we will probably try Dr. Brown's.  I've heard they are great too, but we decided to try to avoid the extra expense and hassle of the parts unless we really need to.
  • I registered for the playtex drop-ins.  I've heard good things about them.  I also saw playtex have a breastmilk storage system where you pump into the liner, store in the fridge, and then use the same liner in the bottle.  That seems pretty easy to me.  When I babysat I always hated pouring from the milk storage bags into the bottles.
