Too much milk?? Q's about drinking+bottles

Claire drinks a lot of milk everyday.  She's not a fan of water but will occasionally take some sips.  Our ped suggests only milk and water as choices for babies/toddlers.  I'm fine with that.  Claire is not a great eater at all.  She's also not a fan of sippy cups no matter how much we (dc mom and I) try.  I would guess that she drinks just over 40 oz of milk a day.  I'm guessing that it compensates for the lack of food.  I'd really like to transition to more sippy cup, but I don't think she'll drink as much.  I wonder if she didn't drink as much, if she'd start to eat more.  Any thoughts, suggestions??  We see the ped next week for her 18 month appt.  Thanks!

  • My pedi told be anywhere from 10-24oz for a toddler at Katie's 12 months appointment so 40oz sounds like a lot to me.  I definitely think that could contribute to her lack of eating if she is already full from milk.  Katie is a very good eater and I would say she gets around 16-20oz a day of milk.  Have you tried straw cups?  K was not a big fan of sippy cups either but she does really well with straw cups.

  • 40 ounces does seem like way too much. from 12-18 months our pedi doesn't want them to have more than 16 ounces a day, and would look for 10-12 as being the right amount.  They should be getting a wide variety of foods to get complete nutrition, and it seems like that would be near impossible to do with 800 calories a day coming from milk.

I would get rid of the bottle if you haven't already, and use straw cups or regular drinking cups.

Milk is very filling, and if she isn't getting as much milk, her food intake should increase.

  • Eek, that is tough. I agree w/ pps though, 40 oz is a lot of milk. Maybe if she has less she'll eat better? I dunno. It is hard when they don't eat well. Ditto the straw cups too, mine are still doing only water in sippies/straws but i think they do better w/ the straws too.
  • DS was a big milk drinker for quite a while, too, and it would definitely impact his food intake when he had a lot of milk.  Our pedi told us initially to limit it to 36 oz and then reduced that to 24 oz, but I can't remember at what ages exactly...I want to say the 36 oz rec was around 15 months because I know I was still BFing (stopped at 16.5 months), and we didn't introduce milk until 12 months.

DS also will not drink more than a couple sips of plain water.  I know your pedi said not to offer anything else, but I'll tell you what we do anyway.  ;)  DS primarily drinks what we call "juice," though it has very, very little juice in it.  I fill his cup almost all the way up with water, leaving about a centimeter of space at the top of a 6 oz cup, then top it off with apple juice.  So, it's about 4-5 parts water and 1 part juice.  Throughout the course of a day, he ends up drinking about 1 cup of juice and 4-5 cups of water (plus some milk, too).  Since it seems you're trying to avoid juice, I might just try a splash to see if that will encourage her to drink the water.

Another thing we did was not allow DS to have his milk cup until he had eaten for a while.  So don't set out a drink with the food; wait for her to ask for it.  And if she asks immediately, try to encourage her to eat some food first...really delay as much as possible.

    HTH!
