Newborn sleeping too much?

We have a ped appt today for our 2 week check up and I'm going to ask the Dr about Ben's sleeping..but I thought I'd ask you guys too.
He seems to sleep for LONG periods of time, like 3+ hours and only wakes up cause I feel like he needs a diaper change and to eat. I really wonder if its normal cause he's on formula, or if he's growing, or what...I'm afraid that waking him up is disrupting, but I'm also afraid that he's not eating enough. :(

Last night for example, I fed him 3 ounces around 10pm, he finally drifted off to sleep around 11pm...I had to wake him up at 3am to change his diaper and feed him 2 more ounces..he went back to sleep right away..and I had hubby wake him up again for another diaper change and feeding around 6:30am. I changed him again at 8:45am, but am letting him sleep....now it's 9:15am and he's still sleeping, and going on 3+ more hours since he's eaten last.

I swear he would've slept right through the night in a soggy diaper with no food if I never woke up in a panic.

Re: Newborn sleeping too much?

  • i used to worry that my 2 week old was sleeping too much. now i think she doesn't sleep enough. i know it's hard to tell, but as long as she's sleeping at night-- doesn't have days and nights mixed up-- she sounds fine to me. one day she may decide to be up screaming for 4 hours, and then you'll wonder where all the sleeping went!

  • I would mention it to your pedi b/c it will put your mind at ease.  My son slept constantly at that age - he was up to eat (I'd usually have to keep him awake to eat) and then go right back to sleep.
  • Normal. It would only be worrisome if he was jaundiced.
  • They sleep almost non stop for the first few weeks.  It's concerning because all we hear about is sleep deprivation.  That comes a little later, don't you worry :-p
