Can pets predict labor?

My cat is acting strange today. He has followed me everywhere I have went, and when I say this I mean EVERYWHERE! I live on a farm, but my house is about 1/4 of a mile from the barns and main yard, and he NEVER goes there. Usually, if he goes out, he just sits on the deck or hunts in the trees right by our house. Well, today he followed me down to the yard and back to the house TWICE! It was really funny, because as he followed me if I stopped for whatever reason, he would just flop down and watch me, then when I went again he'd get up and come along. WIERD!!!Stick out tongue

Re: Can pets predict labor?

  • I thought the same thing!  My cat just sits and stares at me.  She has never set foot on the fireplace, but now will just sit on it and stare at me while I'm lying on the couch.  It's really weird and a little creepy.  I hope it's a predictor!  Good luck!

  • My dog has been funny like that for like the past week and a half or so.... following me from room to room to room... laying down... getting up when I leave to follow me... He always needs to be by my side!

  • I hope my beagle will help me with this, but he's kind of clueless sometimes, so I don't know what will happen. DH thinks he'll have the instinct.
  • I don't know about predicting labor....but hopefully it's a sign for you ladies! My dog has been "up my butt" (following me) basically my whole pregnancy! I think that animals can sense that a major change has taken place and that their environment is undergoing a major change as well.

My dog also like to lay in the nursury when I'm not home....I'm sure he knows what's up....maybe he'll change to predict my labor soon!!! GL to all you ladies!

  • My super skiddish cat who doesn't really like to be cuddled started sleeping behind my knees about the time I got pregnant and has been attached to me ever since :) Also sits in the baby's room and stares at me lol
  • My 5yo Mini Schnauzer has been acting really weird the past few days too. Really hoping she knows something that I dont and that LO will come out soon.
  • Our rottie/lab, who is waaay more attached to my husband than me, has been acting strange for weeks. She used to kind of just ignore me, unless she wanted something. But now she has suddenly started following me everywhere (like is it necessary to accompany me to the bathroom??), laying her head on my lap wherever I sit, and is generally just my little buddy.

That said, I don't think it's necessarily a predictor of labor, as this has been going on for a while now and I am, unfortunately, not in labor. But as a PP said, I think pets sense that a major change is about to take place.

  • Considering they can predict seizures and detect cancer, I would absolutely think they can predict labor.

  • My cats haven't left me alone since I got pregnant. If they are in the other room, they come running if I go into the bathroom! I can't remember the last time I peed by myself. I think they definitely know something is different, and I'm sure they will know when the baby is coming.
  • My dog is staring at me, whining. I'd be pretty happy if it was because I was about to go into labor!
  • I'm not pregnant (that I know of) but since we have been TTC one of our cats (mine before we got together, he is very attached to me) has been acting very strange. He climbs into bed with us every night and never has before, then when we kick him out a little while later he goes and sleeps on the floor by DH.

When I was ovulating and using OPK he followed me into the bathroom each time I was going to test (and not when I was just going in to pee) He would climb up and sniff the toilet, try to climb the cupboard to get at the kit while I was testing, and circle back to sniff the garbage (where the used tests were) meowing the whole time. He only did this for the 2 days I was actually ovulating, then stopped.

    Wierdo...
